Collagen Supplements
« on: August 07, 2024, 09:40:30 PM »

Does anyone here take collagen supplements and if so have you found it helpful. I read that it is good for skin, muscles and connective tissue so am wondering if it can work for VA.

I have just started taking one capsule a day and live in hope that all my wrinkles will eventually disappear !!!! I am allowed to dream.

I take Applied Nutrition marine collagen (powder). I get it from Holland and barrett.

Powder is better than capsules as it is more pure. You need to research into collagen to make sure you are getting a good quality one, eg no fillers, where the fish is sourced, or where the cows are raised, etc, so much research as not all are good quality.  There's types 1, 2, 3, etc....depending on what you want from the collagen.

Hunter & gather are a good brand too, but more expensive that the one I take.

I'm not sure if I've noticed anything tbh, I think my nails are a bit stronger, though my hairdresser says my hair is thicker at the roots.

It's also best to take collagen with vitamin c.

I use Hunter &Gather bovine collagen, as VioletAquarius suggested I researched a lot and avoided any with fillings/additives and liked their ethical sourcing.

Can't comment on wrinkles as that's not an area I'm concerned about (don't get me wrong, Im not wrinkle free! I have them but they don't bother me 🙂). I take it to help with joints. It takes a while to be effective, I think I read about three months, and there's no eureka moment when you notice it working. But about 5mths in I went to visit family for 3 weeks and didn't take any. About 10 days in I notice my knees were aching when getting up from playing with Grandson and when going up and down  stairs. Then I realised it was due to stopping the collagen!

As a side benefit, my nails are stronger, not sure about hair as its another area that has never been a concern for me.i really don't think there has been any benefit to VA, certainly none that I've noticed. Would be interested to hear if you find any research into that, although research into benefits of collagen are lacking as a whole so I'm guessing VA probably hasn't been researched!

I take collagen powder in my coffee every morning to help achieve my protein target.

I don't believe it has any specific aesthetic or anti aging properties and disagree with a lot of the marketing that I see around it, which in my opinion exploits the vulnerabilities that women are made to feel in a sexist and ageist society.

It certainly doesn't hold a candle to sunblock, estrogen and androgen replacement!

I also cannot see any biologically plausible mechanism for it to help with VA.

Maybe it might be better to drink beef broth. Made some in the slow cooker the other day and it was really tasty. However no good for vegetarians.

I started taking it - Ancient and Brave brand - but have had to stop because for some reason it makes me need to pee too much! I never did reach the magic 3 month period. Some people do swear by it though.

I've tried it recently for joint aches.  I got a good quality one but had to give it up because the smell of the tablets was terrible.  Gave me flatulence etc and I just gave up.

I also tried the powder, I put it in my tea, it smelt & tasted awful & I found it made me very nauseous so ditched it sadly.
