Bitter taste
« on: August 29, 2022, 07:47:53 AM »

I have posted before but wonder if anyone reading this has any answers. I have an extremely bitter taste in my mouth and have done so for about a year. At times it is overwhelming and is ruining my life. I am 55 and have a mirena coil so no idea if I am post menopausal. I have been on hrt for 5 months but it hasn’t stopped the taste at all. I have had blood tests, been to the dentist twice, had a head scan- all normal. I have tried medications in case it is oral thrush or reflux but none of them have worked so it wasn’t that. I am taking Seabuckthorn oil, vitamin D, B and zinc but have noticed no change. I wake in the morning and it is hardly there and eating and drinking provides some relief- all food tastes normal. I have read about burning mouth syndrome but my mouth is not burning- I have no pain just very bitter. There was a post on this forum in 2013 from someone who has experienced EXACTlY the same as me and I would love to know how she is now but I fear she no longer uses this forum.

I have had this. I had it for months and months. Now it comes and goes. I imagine it is hormonal but I do not know why. I understand your distress as it is awful. Sorry, I have no advice but just wanted to say you are not alone.

Sorry no advice but you could try sending her a pm if she's still a member. She may have the same email address even if she no longer looks at the forum.

The only time i had a bitter taste was with infected sinuses, it was actually more of a metalic taste but it left me with this taste for a while. Other than that sorry cant help. Hope it goes eventually.

Thank you so much for your replies- it really helps to hear of others who have experienced the same. I do feel so alone as not one of my friends or colleagues has experienced the same so it is great your posts. It also gives me hope to hear that I might just get to the stage where it comes and goes which at the moment I don’t get- it is always there. I have always been so fortunate health-wise and text book when it comes to wonen’s issues- periods, pregnancy, labour etc so this is really knocking me for six! Darn hormones!  :(

I am pleased you are feeling less alone now. Hopefully it will go. It seems to have gone for me most of the time. You could also look to see if you are experiencing acid reflux as that causes a bitter taste.

To send a PM : go to members and type in the name + my messages + type and send.  Clear as mud?

What other meds are you taking?  Some on a chemo therapy regime taste metal.  When did you last speak to your Dentist, could you have something caught that isn't removed by the brush?  An old filling causing trouble?

Hormones can cause really strange symptoms: when I took Tamoxifen every smell and taste was acute  >:(

Thank you- I will try to message her but I suspect she no longer uses this forum. Hopefully because she is better and no longer needs it! 🤞
I went to see my dentist and even had a wisdom tooth removed but the taste came back as soon as the anesthetic wore off. I then paid to see a private dentist to get a second opinion and she was very thorough. I’m not on any meds at all so can only conclude it is hormonal. It must be a type of drying out of the tongue- drinking tonnes of water doesn’t have any effect except endless trips to the loo! 😂 Thanks for all your support and good luck. X

Just a thought - do you eat pine nuts or pesto? It could be ‘pine nut syndrome’.

Yes- thank you Jenna for your post. I did think that at one time and gave up the museli and seeded bread that I was eating for a few weeks but there was no change. Unless there are pine nuts in something else I eat- but can’t think what?

I suppose it would involve checking the ingredients for everything, as boring as it sounds! You never know when you could find something like this hidden away on the list - it really can be surprising sometimes.

This did actually happen to me and the pine nuts were in a bag of mixed nuts and seeds.

There is also menopausal dry mouth syndrome with nasty taste: I bought my Aunt special sweeties from the pharmacy.  'cos after 20 years can't remember the name of said sweeties  ::)

Thankyou clkd. I’ve been eating my way through this and now need to stop- have put on so much weight in a year!  ;D. I have found some pasties for dry mouth but my husband says because they are sugar free to be careful as they could have a laxative effect! Can’t win!! Thanks everyone for your support! X
