Heavy periods
« on: August 12, 2022, 03:52:24 PM »

Hi all, just wondered if anyone experienced really heavy periods before hrt, also after taking it making them worse. I have been on hrt for 1 month and noticed benefits however my period was horrific, blood clots the size of my palm every 30 to 40 mins. I was told it's ok to take transamic acid to slow the bleeding but it seems a bit dodgy to me to make the womb lining thicker then stop it from shedding?!

I was also told by Louise newsons clinic that it doesnt matter how much estrogen you take, if I up the dose it wont make bleeds worse, but this isnt what I read on the internet or was told by my doctor, so confused! Waiting for a scan also but its been over 2 months. Not keen on having a coil fitted. Thanks for any help anyone can give in advance  :)

Is your own Dr a meno specialist? Sad to say but some just don't have a clue.
Have you had any tests done for the heavy bleeding?

Dr Newson is well known for supporting peri/menopausal ladies as she has a lot of knowledge.

Your GP is probably that: a general practioner  ::)

The medication that you have been prescribed is specifically to stop heavy continual bleeding.  I had clotting for many years as a teen/young adult, awful.   :-\. Why would that particular medication make the womb lining thicker?

Browse round. Let us know how you get on?

My first three periods on HRT were as you describe but then it settled down to a light flow for around four days a month. I had to take spare clothes into work and a hot water bottle for the pain for those first three bleeds. Can you take nurofen? This has an ingredient which helps to stem bleeding.

Were you having regular periods before HRT?

I have to beg to disagree with LN. I upped my oestrogen and my periods got worse, much worse and  ended up having hysterectomy as my fibroid had got so big. Also the specialist I did see at Newson said more oestrogen would make periods heavier. This is the trouble there is never a single viewpoint in so much of this!

Thanks everyone for your help and repies, I think I'll give it 3 months and hope I get a scan. Yes so confusing, so many different opinions!! My doctor is a menpause specialist. The louise newson doctor said it doesnt matter how much estrogen you take it's just the fact that your taking it?! Not sure if I wrote that in original message and that's what makes the lining of your womb thicker. The appointment seemed a bit strange to me, they spoke for so long about diet, vit d, excercise etc, all things I already know, this took up nearly all of the time!! It was hard to get a word in and I didnt need to know that stuff. But they do give out so much free information other ways so I didnt complain!
