HRT not working after 5 years or low folate to blame?
« on: July 24, 2022, 08:39:00 AM »

Hello

I am absolutely at my lowest. I've been on HRT successfully since 2015, then 2 years ago I started with debilitating symptoms, far worse than pre HRT. Several investigations later and being unfit for work, financially finished and near suicidal I was referred to a Menopause Clinic. The Dr, after listening to my summarised plight and after having several bloods done has suggested my oestrogen levels are fine and I am low in folate.

Whilst I will do what is recommended, which is take folic acid for 6 weeks, I find it hard to believe that a 5mg vitamin tablet can turn my life around to what it was.

I feel trapped, lost, misunderstood, useless and constantly ill.

Please tell me there is hope that there is someone who has had a life changing result from taking folic acid!!

Thank you so much for listening xxxx :'(

Mmmm... being low in vitamins can make you feel grim I guess. But suicidal?? Not so sure.

My thinking is, that your Hrt has stopped working. What regime are you on? You may need an increase or a different product altogether.

Hi Karen

Welcome to the forum.  Sorry to hear you’re having such a tough time.

It is hard to believe that a deficiency of folate can have such an impact but the menopause specialist has a good point.

Here is a useful article explaining how b vitamins are vital in the proper metabolism and detoxification of hormones.

https://www.biocare.co.uk/news/5-reasons-you-need-b-vitamins.html

However, you should not take a b vitamin in isolation, so it’s important that you take a b complex rather than just folic acid on its own.

I agree with Nas that it sounds like you might need a change in product or dosage.

Where are you on your menopause journey, do you think you might be post menopause now and what are you using at the moment?

Hi.
My folate was low apparently from a blood test. They sent me tablets. 4 months supply.
Took them everyday, didn’t feel any different at all. Sooooooo. 🤷🏼‍♀️
Maybe your hrt needs tweaking?
Mine did, from 0.5mg, to now, 2mg as the years went by. ( tablet form)
I know your bloods say oestrogen levels are fine, but if all other things are ok from the blood tests, ( apart from the folate) then it seems to me, it has to be your hrt. Maybe your bloods are showing ‘fine’ but maybe you need to be higher than ‘fine’ . Like ‘great’ instead. 🤷🏼‍♀️ …if you get my meaning. xx
