HRT minefield need help please x
« on: May 15, 2022, 12:00:50 PM »

Hi ladies

Newbie here so apologies if this has been posted before! I’m fairly new to HRT 46yo with fibroids, flooding, clots and periods that go on for 4-5 weeks at a time… iron is low I’m drained and just totally fed up with it all…. On 2 pumps of gel a day, utrogestan advised 100mg every day continuously… bit concerned about that? I can’t seem to find anyone on that dose? GP said it’s fine as would be on that after a year of hrt abyway regardless of bleeding or not?

Sorry I’m waffling on here  ::) my questions are 1/ can I just take progesterone on it’s own? I feel the oestrogen is making me jittery but at the same time I’m soooo tired all the time… brain alert body knackered, it’s exhausting.

Also, this is a biggie me and hubby off on holiday early June and Sod’s law my period is due the day we go  :-\ really not fancying flooding and clotting around the pool whilst sipping my pina colada :/ how can I make sure it doesn’t happen!! I do have some in date provera knocking about was thinking maybe take them for the duration of holiday?

I would ring my gp but really don’t fancy being on hold for an hour only to have a receptionist tell me try again 08:30 tomorrow no more appts!

Oh! One more thing! Was prescribed vagirux tried that last night for the first time, oh my days today I feel sooo sick with horrendous cramps, any alternatives for dryness that work?

Thank you ladies and sorry for going off on a tangent but when I started writing I couldnt stop!!  :)

Hello Dondays. When I tried ultrogestan  I was given 100mg to use vaginally. I was told to use it every night.

Please do not apologise. Feel free to ask anything on here. We are all learning.

You can use ovestin for vaginal dryness. I find it is more gentle. I use it every day and ignore the advice to reduce it.

I wonder if you could be on a better oestrogen rather then to stop it totally. Maybe a 25mg patch as it is lower? I am sure others will have suggestions for you.

Hi Flossie

Thanks for reply, the reason I am thinking to cut the oestrogen is I read an article on oestrogen dominance which basically gives all the symptoms we are trying to stop? I’ve not had any blood tests just purely going on what gp says, not sure if I need more of one than the other?

Will definitely ask about Ovestin thanks for that and did 100mg of utrogestan stop you having bleeding? You take it every day?

Thanks xx

I do not have periods so the utrogestan did not affect me in that way. I was unable to tolerate it due to it making me depressed. I know myself I cannot cope without oestrogen. I think articles will always have conflicting information. I go on how I feel rather then blood tests but I know everybody is different.  :)

100mg utro daily is the dose for a conti regime if you're meno (1 year without a bleed). If you're peri you should be on sequi 200mg x 12 days, days 15-26 where day 1 is the first day of your bleed. If you use a conti regime in peri you'll get breakthrough bleeding. If you're jittery I would reduce to 1 pump to start with, you can always increase if you find you need to. You can try delaying the utro to delay your bleed but if you have a cycle of your own you'll bleed anyway. Oestrogen dominance isn't really a thing. In peri you'll get spikes and troughs because of what your body is producing but the symptoms we get are from oestrogen deficiency which is why hrt supplements it. A very few women seem to need progesterone but for most of us it's the sh*t we have to put up with so we can have oestrogen.

Hi Dondays,

It is a total minefield!!  I started on Evorel patches 50, but the dose was too high and made me feel
Jittery, like you.  I reduced down to 25 for a month and then increased to 37.5 and feel so much better.  So for me increasing slowly made a real difference.
I met with a consultant recently who told me that as I am on the mini pill I can take Utrogestan 100 daily without a break, he said only need a break if I wasn’t on the mini pill.  I am in peri Menopause.   This was also confirmed by the Menopause clinic I went too.
Taking the Utrogestan continuously may stop your periods.. You could ask for norithisterone, my daughter has taken that to delay a period.  Although given that it’s progesterone too I don’t know how that would work alongside the Utrogestan.
Good luck xx

Thanks so much ladies, lots to think about I will reduce to one pump of oestrogen and see how that goes I’ll ask for noresterone and maybe not take utro while on holiday? I really REALLY don’t want a period on holiday it will be horrendous :( x
