Menopause and Epilepsy
« on: August 29, 2019, 01:40:18 PM »

Hi Ladies

I am new to the group so just what to say hello to you all. I was wondering if anyone in the group has Epilepsy and is going through the menopause, I have Epilepsy and I am really struggling, my seizures have been controlled for over 10 years now but they are starting to come back, I struggling with Anxiety which I have never had along with depression. The doctor can't put me on anything due to my Epilepsy and they are looking to take my coil out now which I just got in again 2yrs ago but I have had real problems with it and I am not sure how I feel about it as I am scared in case it sets my seizures totally off. I was just wondering if anyone else in the group has Epilepsy as there is nothing on the Epilepsy form or sheets for menopause.
If anyone has any thoughts please say I would be really great full. Xx

Hi!  Who manages your Epilepsy?  Is there a charity/group who you could contact?  How about Headway, the Charity for those who have suffered head injuries - epilepsy is a known issue, they may also have ladies in menopause that are affected.

Which Dr can't put you on any treatment for anxiety/depression, your GP?  If not he/she should b referring you to an appropriate consultant.

Hopefully someone will be along, in the mean time put in epilepsy into the search box on here.  Make notes ;-)

Hi Moviestar50  I am on epilepsy medication (Tegretol slow release)  and also HRT (very recent). I have been seizure free for many years since surgery and my medication is gradually being reduced. I asked for a meno clinic referral because I wasn't sure about the interaction between epilepsy medication and HRT. The consultant gave me patches rather than tablets. Tablets get processed in the liver and may interact with the HRT tablets. Using patches avoids that. However there is a severe shortage of patches at the moment.
I can confirm that using patches since April hasn't caused any recurrence of seizures but I understand why you are apprehensive. Have you tried asking for a meno clinic referral? Epilepsy Action does do a menopause guidance booklet and has a helpline.
Which type of seizures do you have?

Perhaps ask to see an epilepsy consultant if you haven't seen one for a while? If it's coming back perhaps they can tweak your medication. And they must have many patients who need hrt too so perhaps can advise on this too. If you get on HRT it seems to take a while to cure anxiety, mine took 3 months.

Hi Ladies

Thank you for getting back to me on the HRT Patches that's very interesting to know. I have two types of seizures vacant Seizures and Grandmal seizures but I don't get any warnings for either of them. My Pregnancy brought my epilepsy out but my MRI showed I have a bit of brain missing lol wonder which bit at the moment. But I was told by my GP that I could not go on any HRT and has but in a referral to a menopause clinic and Neurologist as my seizures are coming back after more than 16yrs and I just wondered if anyone else was in the same position as me.

This is a great site as I have found out a lot on the Menopause and thanks ladies for your advice I will keep you all updated. Xx
