Testosterone
« on: April 26, 2022, 07:21:33 PM »

Hi everyone,
I noticed in the post menopausal (section)  very positive views on taking Testosterone. I'm really pleased that it working for you. And, I was quite surprised with the effects on our eyes when using/ not using Testosterone. My eyes have def become worse since stopping Testosterone.

However, I  am postmenopausal and have been going through hell.
I took Testosterone with a compound bioidentical hormones (It was a private prescription -  can't afford it now - and don't agree with their concepts).

Can i please ask how do you go about getting your Testosterone?  And what is the protocol? I haven't a clue how to go about getting it but I know it will definitely help.
Love you you all  xxx

The male (gel) formulations are available on the NHS, possibly from your GP if they are sufficiently confident to prescribe. You might have to stress that it is for loss of libido. That aside, it might have to be prescribed initially by a NHS menopause specialist or clinic, and then your GP can take over the prescribing after that. This is how I got mine.

You're likely to need a referral to a meno clinic to get it.

I would love to know how to get testosterone too. I've been on HRT successfully for many years, although as an older woman l have had to fight my corner many times to stay on it. However, my G.P will not prescribe Testosterone as she says it's not licensed. She has tried to refer me to a menopause clinic but apparently this got triaged to the gynae dept at our local hospital. I know from experience that not all gynaes are meno specialists, so l said l didn't want to be told yet again l was too old! Is going private the only way?

Perhaps keep the appointment and ask them to refer you on if they're clueless? Your gp is right, there's no medical reason you can't have testosterone it's purely a bureaucratic problem because there's no product licensed for women. Mine was prescribed by an NHS meno clinic but every time I need a new prescription I have a battle for it. If you go private they may prescribe androfemme which isn't available on the nhs so it will be a private prescription. The other option might be an email to Dr Currie if your gp will prescribe based on her recommendation.

I got mine initially in May 2015 at a private appointment (reluctantly) - and this was before the NICE guidelines made provision for it to be prescribed off-licence for women. Thereafter I have it prescribed by a GP in my local NHS practice who is gynae specialist and great!

Diamonds and pearls - maybe ask again about your referral and explain to the GP you need a menopause specialist? Are you able to look up the place/people where you've been referred? if the place is near to you maybe go along with it and see what happens - armed with all the information you have re guidelines etc....

Hi Hurdity, Thank you for your reply. I remember your journey and your success with testosterone ...we are the same age and l wish l had been brave enough to follow your example at the time. I have discussed my needs with my G.P and although l am still able to get my hrt  ( often l have to fight for it) she's not keen to consider testosterone, even though she is sympathetic.
The referral ended up being triaged to endocrinology at my local hospital. This wasn't correct, and on re submitting the referral  it went to the gynae dept where on enquiring l found there were no meno specialists there, so in frustration l cancelled it. This was all during the last few years of Covid so l gave up at this point. My G.P has said if l went private the practice may not honour an unlicensed prescription anyway so l felt really unsure how to proceed!

Thank you Sheila, l might ask my G.P if she would consider prescribing on the strength of a recommendation from Dr Currie. Worth a try!

Hi diamond and pearls I also have mine through meno clinic in Dundee. However endocrinology is to do with hormones so maybe good to down that line?

Hi
All I have just stopped Testogel again as I think it was making me more aggressive/angry, I previously had a similar incident and reduced my sachet to last 17 days. Although I enjoyed getting my energy back I can't cope with the increase in my libido. Maybe because my husband has less so what's the point! The last time I came off by the time my totesterone levels were tested it was difficult to tell if they were too high. So feel a bit lost now

When my dr was giving me Testo for a first time, she said 'remember that if you'll feel like punching someone's teeth to decrease the dose'!  ;D

For me it deals with my anxiety I have tones of without it, and makes me feel stronger... not so weepy and scared as without.

Hope it helps!
