Should I continue with HRT after mini-stroke?
« on: April 20, 2022, 08:53:05 PM »

I have been taking HRT for 10 months, it’s been amazing. 2 weeks ago I had a mini stroke, caused by a carotid artery blocked with cholesterol plaque, which has now been unblocked with surgery. I was already medicated for high blood pressure, which was well controlled, and am now also taking statins and clopidogrel to manage cholesterol and prevent blood clots. Is it ok to carry on taking HRT now? My GP seems unsure. I use body-identical oestrogen patches and Utrogestan. Thank you! :)

Welcome.  I have to ask why your Surgeon hasn't discussed this issue and if necessary, referred you to a menopause specialist?

Thank you. Good question, I will try to contact the surgeon’s secretary.

Let us know how you get on, you may like to contact an NHS menopause clinic if your Surgeon isn't au fait with HRT etc. ;-)

Thank you. I asked my consultant who said it’s safe to continue. Transdermal Oestrogen patches carry  less risk than oral tablets. Also I now take anti-platelet medication which reduces clot risk even more. Thanks everyone for your support  :-)
