Dizziness/possible allergies
« on: April 16, 2022, 01:46:05 PM »

Hi ladies

The past week I have suffered from a strange sensation- as if I am swaying slightly or need to hold on to something. Not all the time but it lasts a while when it happens. My head feels “full” and I feel pressure around my eyes. If I move my head my eyes seem to take a few seconds to refocus.

I haven’t experienced anything like this before and the more it happens the more I panic which isn’t helping either.

I was fine yesterday and thought it had gone but this afternoon it’s back with a vengeance. Does this sound as if it could be allergy related?

Many thanks.

Light headedness, can be a meno symptom,I suffer from it a lot and just exactly as you have described,my Dr prescribed stugeron, which you can buy over the counter but she told me to take it at a higher dose of 2 three times daily and it worked within a day or two, this is now what I take every time I get this but always best to consult your GP

Thank you for replying Jaypo, I appreciate it.

I didn't realise light headedness was a meno symptom. Do you think it's possible to get new symptoms post meno? I never really know if that is possible yet I do tend to blame most things on it, despite being 7 years post. If that makes any sense at all.

Your oestrogen keeps diminishing post meno, which in turn brings on new symptoms, allergies can also heighten as I've discovered to my cost, also stomach issues can arise, reflux etc but Drs don't seem to realise that,in fact one GP told me I'd be better off coming on this forum,as the ladies on here probably know more than him!! Beggars belief doesn't it?

Hi Lynda07, I know how you feel & it’s not nice. I can have a swaying feeling inside my head but no movement in my body or my body sways slightly, I feel as if I’m leaning to my left side when walking. I think there is a connection between anxiety & this feeling at times, but it’s hard not to get anxious when your feeling it. Mine became really bad last June after a collapse at work at first the doctor thought I might have suffered a mini stroke as my balance was bad but a CT scan ruled this out, I am seeing a ENT next month ( it has taken 10 months to see him) but I feel it is all hormonal  related. It doesn’t help that I have a history of anxiety so now with the anxiety that comes with the menopause I feel I’m in over drive most of the time. Thank goodness for this site I get a lot of reassurance from it. Take care x

Yes Jaypo, that really does beggar belief but sadly doesn't surprise me either.

Poppy that's how I feel, as if I am swaying inside my head. It is interesting that you think there may be a connection between this and anxiety as I really am suffering with that, especially health anxiety and like you, I feel I am in overdrive most of the time.

I don't know what I would do without this site and being able to ask questions so thank you for replying x

  Hi Ladies
Can I ask if these feelings of Lightheadedness, swaying etc  is worse when you have been busy, or stressed . I too have these feelings, and suffer from anxiety, but I find if I've had a relaxing day, no upheavels etc, I'm feeling quite normal. But on days I've rushed around, or worried about things, I wake up with a buzzing in my head,/ears, and I know I'm going to have a bad day. Especially in the mornings, after I have had lunch I'm not too bad, although still feel weird if I turn my head quickly, or look up or down. I've been post meno  for around 7 yrs, and this dizzy feeling is getting worse.

Hi Lynda, just a thought but have you tried taking any antihistamines for your symptoms ?
If they help it might mean that you could be dealing with some sort of allergy.

Hi Jules55, it has crossed my mind that if this isn’t linked to allergies it could be anxiety. It’s a new symptom for me though but I am often very stressed and anxious and like you I can tell as soon as I wake up if it’s going to be a bad day as I feel lightheaded and ‘wrong’.

Mayflower-I haven’t yet tried antihistamines although I know I should as it might just help. I suffer from a really annoying and irrational fear of tablets - I never used to be like this but it really does bother me. I know this makes me my own worst enemy. I have a pack - I just need to take one I guess and see if things improve.

A few years back, every so often, I would become dizzy out of the blue, eg while walking so not head rush associated with getting up quickly. I would have to hold on to something or someone for a few minutes until it passed. It didn’t happen often enough to have it investigated, but was quite alarming at the time. I found it reassuring to have read that it was possibly a menopausal symptom, which is likely as I haven’t experienced it since being very post menopausal.

I have had this, it can be so bad it happens as I’m lying down. It was sinusitis, and nasal rinsing seemed to be what got rid of it. It is really awful when it happens. You could try either anti histamines, or a neilmed bottle for nasal rinsing, even steam inhalation with light massage around my face can resolve it.

I would see your doctor as it could be an inner ear problem. Mine was caused by a virus that left some permanent damage.

Hi Ju Ju, that’s how I feel as well as a swaying sensation (mu husband assures me I am standing still). I’m post meno now though so not sure if it can be menopausal or not.

ATB, steaming is a great idea, thanks for that. I get a lot of post nasal drip (sorry if tmi) - is nasal rinsing easy to do?

Sheila99, I wondered about that but haven’t had any earache?

Thanks again ladies.

Yes nasal rinsing is easy, you just follow the instructions with the kit, neilmed is a squeeze bottle thing, and make sure you properly prep it and use the little sachet you get with them. Obviously, if it persists you should see a doctor- I let mt GP know I have bad hay fever, the symptoms and what I did for it. She also told me of a non drowsy anti histamine Fexofenadine you can get at the pharmacy.
