Surgery and stopping HRT
« on: April 12, 2022, 03:00:21 PM »

I was due to have a deviated septum repair, polyps removed etc, a day surgery, on April 6th but my pre op PCR was positive so now I can’t have the surgery until June 10th. I had covid 2 years ago which left me with inflamed lungs and a bad nasal drip so always coughing especially at night and seemingly this surgery will help. The only problem is that my GP took me off my HRT 3 weeks before that, March 16th, (2 scoops of Oestrogel and 100mg Utrogestan daily) and has said to stay off this until a week after the procedure so 17th June before I take again!! I’m really suffering now, wasn’t too bad up to now, the hot flushes are very frequent and I’m back at school next week teaching 11-16 year olds. The weather is also heating up so I’m going to be a bag of sweat! Is it really necessary to stay off it until then. Is it dangerous to go back on my HRT and stop again before the next date for my procedure?

Why is there a need to stop at all? Assuming you're on transdermal hrt so no increased risk of blood clots. Or am I missing something?

Hi, the leaflet with the utrogestan states that ‘you may need to stop taking HRT 4-6 weeks before surgery to reduce the risk of a blood clot’

OK I did miss something🤔. Are you on sequi or conti? Would it be an option to carry on with low dose oestrogen and just stop the utro 6 weeks before? I use a 6 week cycle anyway (late peri) so I'd be tempted to stretch the cycle a little.

Hi up to date information is that you don’t need to stop transdermal hrt before an operation. x

https://www.newsonhealth.co.uk/uploads/2021/10/Do-I-need-to-stop-HRT-before-my-surgery-for-sign-off.pdf

Have a look at this document which states there is no risk from transdermal oestrogen or micronised progesterone . x

Update: my GP rang and explained that she does not want any excuse for the procedure to be cancelled last minute as I’m taking HRT and to resume taking the 100mg utrogestan and 1 pump of Oestrogel, rather than 2. Sweats and flushes starting to subside but still frequent.
Happy Easter everyone 🐣
