 I know there are fluctuations in oestrogen during peri. Suppose you have your last period on 1/1/22 and aren't declared post menopause until a year later 1/1/23. In the intervening year, are oestrogen levels the same as will be post menopause (ie rock bottom) or are there still some fluctuations during this year?

Fluctuation mayB.  Mine still have a flurry - my last period was in 2002 after a few years of intermittent bleeds.

Still fluctuations just not enough to cause a bleed. The year is an artificial date used by the nhs. After a year without a bleed they will investigate any bleeding but some women will have a genuine period after this.

Thanks. I assume the fluctuations are within a narrower range during this year though, eg between 20 and 100 rather than upto 300 or 400. Hoping to start hrt soon but adamant will only take continuous regime. Had a bleed over 3 months ago , am 52 and when checked estrodial levels they were only 79 (FSH was same value) so hoping my GP will allow me start soon on continuous regime. Waiting for current shortages of hrt to  resolve before start also( meant to be July when supply increases)

Why only a conti regime? If you use a conti regime when not meno at best you'll get breakthrough bleeding and at worst your lining will build up which puts you at higher risk of cancer. If you want to be bleed free your best option would be a mirena for the progestogen which will normally prevent bleeding even in peri.
Fluctuations are not always within a narrower band, you can still get peaks and troughs.

Measurements are for that moment in time: yesterday or tomorrow they will probably be totally different.

Some find that keeping a mood/food/symptom diary of use.  Also decide which symptom you would like to ease first and would HRT actually help?

Let us know how you get on.  Consider too your over all diet and exercise regimes.  Menopause = the last monthly period.  But none of us know which months that might be  .  Mine waxed and waned for a few years .......... some ladies stop completely and realise a few months after, some miss a couple then stop.  There's no rhyme nor reason

Breakthrough bleeding doesn't bother me. I had  daily for almost 2 years on cerazette until a few months ago. If continuous while peri is so dangerous, then why can people switch from sequi to continuous after a year even if still peri? I couldn't face grogginess with 200 dose of progesteron and then potential lack of sleep the other 2 weeks. And then the whole adjustment agai when move to continuous after a year. Hoping for big bang approach where one big move and that's it 😃 Am in Ireland and know of one specialist who will prescribe continuous to peri..based on last bloods, I think I'm post menopause (LH and FSH both in the post menopause category according to bloods)..Will get taken again in another month so see if same..Only symptoms I have are joint pain. Had some for a few years but gotten really bad since oestrogen dropped 2 months ago. Stopping me powerlifting as heavy as I'd like so I've got  motivation to take hrt now.

A read through of many posts on here will tell why it may not be a good choice. Are you on HRT now or assuming you will have problems? Most (not all) have no side effects from utrogeston. If you do there are other progestogens you can try. You could use a mirena for the progestogen so you are unlikely to bleed and can be used effectively as a conti regime in peri and meno. Your body is changing so it's probably unrealistic to expect your hrt not to need changing with it.
The patient info leaflet fot conti hrts tell you it's for those who are meno not peri. There's a reason they say this and perhaps they know more about their own product than the gp does.
It might be worth getting your joints checked out by your doctor. It could be meno but could be something else such as the start of arthritis. Your body may be telling you lifting heavy weights may not be a good thing.

As oestrogen levels drop muscles may become lax = aches and pains.
