Estriol falls out down toilet
« on: April 01, 2022, 09:22:14 PM »

I am on HRT but after recurring UTI’s (or so I thought) was prescribed Ovestin. I thought it was working but got a bit of stinging so got Estriol cream that I had maybe 5 years ago.
Then I had Covid almost 3 weeks ago and can’t remember how many nights of the loading dose I missed.
Anyway, so back on the Estriol cream but still weeing a fair bit at night and most of it ends up in the toilet, so I’m thinking not much is being absorbed?
Been a bit sore and weeing more the past couple of days so wondering if the Estriol isn’t being absorbed enough,  so tonight as Ovestin is a lot less to ‘put in’ than Estriol I used Ovestin tonight hoping it will ‘stay in’.
The Estriol applicator has about a finger full of cream while the Ovestin applicator is 1 gram, like the tip of the finger to the first joint down if that makes sense.
I never had this problem of Estriol falling out when I go to the loo in the night 5 years ago so I’m guessing things inside are a bit, well, looser.
Does anyone else have problems with the creams falling out during night time toilet trips?

No dont have this problem but I dont use the applicator with Ovestin, just apply myself and spread it around inside and outside so its not in there in a big blob that can drop out. Hope that helps.

As you say, there is a lot of cream with Estriol Cream so some of the base is bound to leak out, it has to go somewhere! Hopefully the Ovestin residue will not be so noticeable. As well as applying internally you can apply a little externally as well if you are sore there. It is important to keep up with the maintenance at least twice a week after you have done the loading dose.
Hope you feel better soon

Thankyou for your replies, I will start applying the Ovestin myself without the applicator.

My finding is that  as the  tissues  become flexible again loss of  the cream is less. It is good to  read you have  a topical oestrogen  to use. It takes  time to work  but it will make  a great difference to your  life  :)

I Hope you feel  better soon , too  :)

Thankyou for your reply, there is so much coming out I really don’t think much was being absorbed at all.

I have seen it suggested by doctors that you do what Dierdre does without the applicator,  but use half as much and twice as often.

I have had the same problem with with vagifem.  I used 2 one morning - one high up and one lower down.  One fell out when I went for a no2, and the other fell out when I looked to see what had happened.  ::)  I realised that this could have happened without me realising, so I always use them at night now.

I worried about this when I first started using ovestin and asked my gp and she said not to worry as would be just the fillers coming out and the stuff you need would be absorbed.  I'm not too keen on trying to rub it in with my finger..  I've used the applicator all the time and the cream still seems to work after using 3 years.

I think the best thing if using Estriol with an applicator is to only put it just before going to bed. Though Deidre's suggestion about applying it yourself really does work well - BUT then remembering to apply it twice a week is essential.

I’m up in the night at least 4 times for a wee after I’ve put it in, so lose a lot down the loo. :(
