Oestrogel (if you can get it!) & Mirena issues
« on: March 20, 2022, 07:33:41 AM »

Morning ladies,

I wonder if anyone can advise.

I had the Mirena put in in November,  spotted lightly for three months then stopped, then had a very light period (all the signs preceding it in February). Around that time I also went back on Oestrogel after a break of over two years while I had hysteroscopy and follow up biopsy - all well, had a polyp and disordered proliferative endometrium; hospital happy for me to go back on Oestrogel now that I have the coil). After about a week on Oestrogel I started spotting (minimal) and this has continued off and on for three weeks. I know I could still spot with the Mirena for around 6 months (possibly more) but it could also be the Oestrogel? I'm 57 and would love to stop having periods! The Oestrogel has just started to kick in I think: night sweats and hot flushes easier, adrenaline surges and anxiety somewhat eased which has helped with me starting a new job after being off from my previous job for 3 months with work-related stress. But I showed up at my pharmacy on Friday to be told they had no Oestrogel (I'm surprised I got a pack last month) and there's none in any pharmacy in the county.  I called the surgery but can't speak to anyone until tomorrow. I'm thinking Sandrena may be my best bet and have checked there are stocks of this locally. But I'm not sure what the equivalent dosage would be to two pumps of Oestrogel daily? I also feel like throwing in the towel already what with the spotting and then having to change to a different Oestrogen so soon.  I

I was in tears yesterday, not helped by hubby (who is always so supportive) saying it's no big deal and I can just get it changed. I really have had enough! I've had two years of nightmare periods which finally seemed to settle,  then all the peri symptoms and the work stress. I am tired of fighting.

Sorry for venting.

Hi Skylark

Firstly, sending big hugs. This stuff is really tough and we are flying blind.

I had spotting throughout with Mirena for about 4 years then nothing for about 3 but I did get some spotting again when I started taking Sandrena.

It really does need a chat with a good GP but I understand having to wait is hard when you feel so crap.

I would try and hold out for that tomorrow and get yourself focused today on doing something you enjoy and can distract you. Be kind to yourself.

Don't be too despondent, oestrogen is usually the easy part to sort. 2 pumps oestrogel is equivalent to a 50 patch. I don't know about sandrena but there is comparison information on Louise Newson's website if it isn't under the Treatments tab on here. There are many options and I'm sure you'll find one to suit you. The gp will have to give you a different prescription anyway and it's her job to give you the same dose. Might be worth asking the pharmacy what they can get first.

Thank you ladies. I managed to get my script changed snd have picked up Sandrena 1mg today. I sachet per day. Looking at the comparison charts this seems the right amount to roughly equal 2 pumps of Oestrogel ? As I'm still getting to grips with a new job I'm worried how I'll feel!

I'll try to persevere despite the spotting.
