Perimenopause symptoms
« on: March 10, 2022, 09:46:12 AM »

Hello All
I am 48 and was diagnosed with going through early stages of menopause around 18 months ago as I had sore breasts, dry vagina and period stomach pain all through the month.  However the last few months of and on I have had the most painful teeth and gums which have caused pain like no other, also a very itchy anus which causes scratching on another level.  I cannot seem to put on weight whatever I eat and it would appear I can no longer eat to much sugar or the itching is to much to bear. I love my cakes and biscuits. I am not on any medication. My GP is next to useless I am currently changing my GP as I feel that whatever I say ie is the itchy anus and teeth related to the menopause the answer is always NO but said in a way that makes me feel stupid.
I am not keen on HRT but not sure what to do about the teeth and itchy issue it is not all the time but it comes and goes when it wants to. Any advice as to what to take or do to help with the symptoms I have a dentist appointment every 6 months so I am very sure my teeth are fine.  Thank you all in advance for your assistance xx

Hello Clare. Welcome to the forum. The itching you describe is something I have too. I found it was due to being low in oestrogen. If you did not want to be on HRT then you can use a cream for that. My GP prescribed a canesten cream that is 1% hydrocortisone. I also get itchy gums and tooth pain for no apparent reason. It is very uncomfortable so I sympathise. With the vaginal dryness I recommend ovestin or vagifem. The dryness is caused by low oestrogen the sooner you treat it the better.

Hi Clare, I also have dental pain, always the same side at the back, very annoying, I have seen 3 different dentists and had Xrays etc, all 3 say they can find nothing wrong at all but it could be TMJ related.  As the dentist said this I thought 'Nah, I don't clench my jaw ever!'
In the car on the way home I noticed I did actually clench my jaw, the morning after I woke up and my jaw was clenched.
Skip forward, I was talking to a Paramedic about all of my billions of symptoms and she told me about Balance website, as I read what the Dr had gone through re TMJ, tinnitus etc I thought 'WHOA this is the same as me' Here is the link https://www.balance-menopause.com/menopause-library/hard-work-the-serious-impact-of-hormones-out-of-whack/

I also have itchy skin, not anus but all over, scalp, body.  For this I take a Cetirizine tab every day and that sorts that.  I am not saying it is the same for you but worth a thought if they are suitable for you.

I have just started HRT tabs and feel bloody brilliant (so far)

Thanky you
If I want to increase my estrogen but not take HRT I have seen on Amazon alone loads of tablets that do just that. Is it safe to do this without contacting a doctor

I would advise you talking to your doctor first.

Do not buy medication over the internet as it may be full of flour/corn flour etc..  Anything that is over the counter in a UK Pharmacy should be OK.

U can ask your GP for a referral to an NHS Menopause Clinic though they have long waiting lists.  For the itchy anus, buy Anusol over the counter, that's what my GP recommended.  Or use 'savlon' or 'vaseline' regularly.  Ask for appropriate vaginal atrophy treatment too, U don't need an exam for that.

Low oestrogen levels may cause the body to go dry: inside and out; skin, scalp, deep in the ears, anus, vagina, between the toes, eyes ......... I find that 'vaseline' hand cream works in the main, or 'nivea' which DH uses for his itchy ear lobes, dry leg skin ........

Let us know how you get on.   :welcomemm:
