Can anybody advise me?
I went to see a gynaecologist about my HRT prescription…….oestrogel and utrogestan as, at the age of 67 and the fact that I’ve been on HRT since I was 42, I wanted to speak to somebody knowledgeable; my go is absolutely clueless.  The outcome is, the gynaecologist has written to my go suggesting that I remain on my medication and that it’s put on repeat prescription.  My gp took it off repeat about 5 years ago and I have to request a new prescription each three months.

I rang on Friday for a prescription……..they’ve had correspondence from gynaecologist, only to be told it will be discussed today or tomorrow at the gp’s meeting!!  Can my gp override the consultant gynaecologist?

Yep.  Sadly it depends on budgets as well as if a GP's back goes up ........... is your gynaecologist au fait with menopause symptoms etc.?  If your GP is arsey then ask for a referral to an NHS menopause clinic .  In the mean time, do ring your Consultant tomorrow and explain that you are facing a brick wall with repeat prescription as suggested by himself.  Could he ask a pharmacist to prescribe, bypassing the GP?

Get in touch with the Consultant and explain what has happened.

It seems that gps are and feel accountable for what is prescribed as it is their responsibility, ultimately, not the specialist, who is only making recommendations. I am up against this, too, but gps can't be bypassed. I find just chipping away, exhausting though that is, does slowly get there, as does contacting the practice manager to ask who has menopause training and if not, why not. I'm coming round to see the responsibility aspect now it's been explained to me, but it seems not to be about rank or status, but where the actual patient responsibility lies. Hope this helps.

Well I’ve finally managed to get through to my GP……….she’s changed the utrogestan to the 100mg per night, every night but………left the oestrogel at 1.5 pumps per day (I know I can just use the 2.5 pumps as consultant advised)  ….and also refused to prescribe the testogel as she isn’t allowed to prescribe it…..only the consultant can do it!!   I’ve left a message with consultants secretary.

Oh and while I’m speaking to people who know more than my GP, do I have to take the utrogestan orally, as that’s what it says on the box?

It shouldn't be a battle
