Does anybody take prophylactic antibiotics after sex? Just wondering if anybody has ever forgot to take it. I'm paranoid as I've had so many and almost expecting one and wonder whether to take the 3 day course just in case.

I can never understand why ABs are offered - World Wide use of ABs is a huge problem with bugs becoming immune to treatments.

3 days for an embedded urinary tract infection isn't enough.  I would suggest that you begin using appropriate vaginal atrophy treatment, because VA mimics UTIs really, really well.

I've actually been using a prophylactic AB for quite a while with 100% success. As I'm not in a committed relationship I'm not using them as regularly as others would and my urinary-gyny guy was happy with me using them. 3 days AB course always was enough for any infections I previously got which were only following sex.  I don't get them at any other time.  I have tried localised estrogen for VA but got spot bleeding and had to stop.

Were urine samples sent to a Lab for testing though ........... the only way to prove an infection is present.  Rubber protection (Durex) can cause irritation which may not be infection.  When did you last seen the Gyny? 

Problem with using ABs on an 'in case' basis leaves the body open for lack of response should a nasty virus/bug attack.

I have Jules, best thing ever.  I haven’t had a UTI for almost 2 years now.  I also use VA treatment but still need this.  My urine was always sent for testing so I knew these were true infections, I would rather take 1 antibiotic after sex than keep taking a whole course.

What is causing the 'infection' - there must be a reason why sexual intercourse causes a flare up.  Is it an embedded infection ? which should be treated though it can take a while to diagnose; embedded infections can be life threatening.

Yes sent to the lab. It's common for women to be prone to UTIs after sex, more so with menopause.

Me too. I was having repeated bouts and courses of ABs. I know lots of women young and old with the same problem.  It's our female anatomy isn't it and of course thinning of tissues with menopause makes it worse.

I have had/have an embedded bladder infection which I now only use d mannose to control. Use prophylacticly around sex. I understand your fear of the pain of uti completely and you may not feel able to try something different but do have a Google about d mannose - for me it was worth the try as ABs so damaging to balance of the body and it really works for me. If you feel happier carrying on with your ABs though then don’t allow anyone else to make you feel guilty about taking them - repeat/consistent uti is an utter misery and destroys quality of life. Would echo what others have said about finding a urologist with a specialism is embedded infections - it might be that you can be rid of this forever with the right support?

   Helen1968.  Having suffered with VA which has been eased with appropriate treatment; as well as reacting badly to most ABs; seeking an opinion of a specialist urologist might be the way to go.

Just to say science has come a long way with regard to AB’s, they are designed to treat that one specific area and they are so successful in treating bladder infections. I have no problem about using them whereas before I would have been worried.

Yep.  If someone requires ABs following intercourse, the reason should be investigated.  Because it 'works' .........
