« on: January 11, 2022, 02:57:32 PM »

Hi, I'm a new starter today and just finding my around. I'm here primarily for help with headaches. I'm on HRT but it's made them worse so any help will be very welcome.

Thanks

:welcomemm:  hormonal upheaval can make headaches worse.  Tell us more about how old you are, which regime of HRT you have tried.  There are several ways to deliver medication which may help with the headaches.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

I'm 51, no period for around 2 years. I've always suffered with headaches, I've had hemiplegic migraines since 2015 although haven't had one for a while now :-)  Earlier this year I've started with vestibular migraines. They are both very nasty but also rarely happen. It's the everyday headaches that are the nightmare for me. I tried Evorel patches but my headaches increased but were fairly mild. Because of them though I've been on the Oestrogel 80 microgram gel and the 100mg Progesterone tablets. I've been on this for almost a month now and the headaches are still everyday but are much worse. I wake up with it and it gets progressively worse throughout the day. Paracetamol or ibuprofen don't touch it, the only thing that helps is codeine but obviously I can't keep taking that?  I'm wondering whether to just go back onto the patches?

Any help or advice will be massively appreciated

Thanks

Hi Claire,

i started HRT and it made my migraines a 100 times worse, virtually every single day i was taking Sumatriptan and/or codeine. Prior to HRT, i was getting migraines more frequently, 2 - 3 times a week hence i went to see a menopause specialist GP privately who then prescribed oestrogen patches and utrogestan daily.

See my other posts but i abruptly stopped HRT as it was making me seriously ill - I didn't wait 3 months to see if it would improve  (as we've been told to do) as that's just plain stupid if you know its actually making you a huge amount worse than before you started HRT.

To cut a long story short, i started taking progesterone cream only and migraines (and bad headaches) have pretty much stopped. My sister has had the same experience (she's 51) and her main menopausal symptom was the increasing migraines & feeling more stressed/anxiety.
