Hi lovely ladies. Just a quick one. I'm 44 years old and trying to get pregnant.  I have high fsh and low amh. I've been told by my gp I'm menopausal. I went to ivf clinic who said my chance with ivf are low and wouldn't want me to waste my money and to go for donor eggs which is not what we want to do. My periods have stopped since last year. I have tried everything..reflexology..acupuncture..cupping n lots of supplements but I'm not getting anywhere. I only have occasional hot flushes and no other symptoms of menopause and ofcourse the periods stopping. Menopause definitely doesn't run in the family as my elder sister at 49 still have regular cycles. I wonder if hrt will help me get my cycles back n hopefully achieve a pregnancy. Would love to hear if anyone is in a similar position. Any advice or help very much appreciated. xx

I'm so sorry but I don't think it will help. You'll get periods if use a sequi regime but just because of the hormones you've taken, I don't think it stimulates your body to start cycling again. The ivf clinic can give you drugs to stimulate your ovaries to produce more eggs than normal but I don't know if it works at all in meno. Is the clinic refusing to treat you? The chances of success at 44 are low even if you're not meno but surely your choice as long as you know the odds? They're right your chances are much better with a donor egg but I completely understand your reluctance, I wouldn't want that either. Some clinics have better success rates with older women than others, might be worth a chat with one of them in case they can suggest anything?

Your body is getting towards the end of it's natural child bearing capability.  Have you kept a temperature chart to check ovulation hours?  It can be hard work and sex can become clinical with the chance that one partner may become fed up and walk away.  Would this be your first pregnancy? 

Sometimes as hormone levels drop women become broody like the body is shouting 'your last chance'!  As sheila99 suggests, HRT may well not help.  Hormones may be stimulated but not enough to sustain a pregnancy.  I think the advice from the IVF Clinic is good, however disappointing. 

If you haven't had a natural period for over 6 months, the likelihood of conceiving becomes less and less.  Menopause - last period ever - usually periods wax and wane for as much as 10 years prior to that last bleed and it's suggested that 12 months without means we are into menopause.  Confused?  I was late 40s when mine disappeared.

Would you consider fostering in the short term until you decide which step to take next?

I know nothing about this but read on the news this morning a 57 year old women had just had a baby boy after IVF.
