Utrogestan and hair shedding...will it calm down?! Please advise
« on: December 03, 2021, 01:59:01 PM »

Hi all

I did post on the Utrogestan thread but no replies.

I had a break from HRT for about 18 months...no hair shedding. I'm now on Utrogestan (to help insomnia) and Evorel. I started a couple of months ago. Sleep is better but my hair is shedding. If I put my hands through it, quite a few hairs come out, over and again.

Obviously, I don't want to panic...it could be because I started up HRT again, so the hormones are rebalancing.

BUT Im worried it might just be the Utrogestan. Any words of wisdom?

Hi Noheroics, not sure about wisdom but I can add my testimony re hair loss. I've been on daily estrogel and 7 days per months utrogestan for 3 years and my hair shedding is copious and pretty constant, even during my three weeks not on utrogestan. I shed a lot but luckily I have masses of hair. Hopefully someone else might come along with more reliable information

Hi!

Utrogestan (micronized progesterone) is a hair friendly progestogen.  At the level of the hair follicle, progesterone decreases the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) through the inhibition of 5-alpha reductase activity.  DHT is one of the main causes of pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia or AGA) in women.  I hope that's reassuring.

If you're concerned about your hair loss, you should speak to your doctor to rule out any underlying health issues, such as thyroid disorders.

I've also lost a lot of hair and have a dermatologist appointment in March.  In the interim, I'm using 5% minoxidil (Regaine/Rogaine).

We're in good company, according to this article in The Atlantic:  The Year America's Hair Fell Out.  The pandemic has been a near-perfect mass hair-loss event.

But I really feel that starting Utrogestan has caused the hair shedding...am I alone in thinking this?

Hi, I had hair loss in my 20’s due to trauma and a medication so I really feel for you as it’s terrifying. I’d get a full panel thyroid blood test done privately or through your GP if they offer one.
I’ve not heard of hair loss with Utrogestan and I looked into it as I was frightened of having hair loss again. Is there a reason you think it’s the Utrogestan and not the Evorel?
My hair is thinner than it once was due to genetics, my mum’s hair got thinner at around the same age. Does it run in your family too?
I hope it gets better soon.
