How to lose weight on Mirtazapine, help please
« on: April 03, 2022, 08:31:31 AM »

I’ve been on Mirtazapine for 4 months now. I am much calmer and sleep is better. I must admit I don’t feel as hungry as I did to begin with and I’ve been eating less than I normally do but the few pounds I put on won’t come off.
Last 10 days I’ve had Covid and ate even less. Before I would have probably lost several pounds
I’m concerned about having to totally watch what I eat on holiday as I don’t know how to lose it

How much do you take?  I have been on 15 mg since last summer and  hadn't had any problems with weight gain until the last few weeks so I am tempted to think it might not be the mirtazapine to blame. I have recently increased testosterone so it could be that. Have you likewise changed anything else that might have an effect?
I find if I'm feeling happy I tend to put on a bit of weight simply because when I have anxiety I lose my appetite plus I think adrenaline burns calories like you wouldn't believe. So it might just be we are both in a happier place!
That doesn't help you wanting to lose weight which was your original question. I find carbs are usually the baddies, maybe on holiday you could eat protein with salads and do without chips/ bread etc?

Thanks Gnatty you are probably right all this time I’ve been the one amongst my friends that didn’t put weight on. I’ve probably been burning anxious energy. I hasten to add I’m not sylph like my BMI is around 24.5 hence the worry about keeping weight down.
I’m definitely going to refuse potatoes and enjoy the salads and protein
I’m also on 15mg I must admit it suits me. Constipation no longer issue but quite often have a dry mouth. The laid back feeling and general happiness is great and hot flushes have greatly diminished

I’m taking these antidepressants. They have really helped as I sleep better and my mood is better. Despite maintaining an ideal weight for years, l have now put on half a stone. I was warned that increased appetite and weight gain was a possible side effect. I’m not aware of eating more than before. I did lose all the extra weight after a stomach virus, but of course, rehydration and normal diet, the weight is going back on. I’m working hard on not letting it get worse and hopefully, when the cause of sleepless nights and low mood is sorted, I can come off them.

Hi Ju Ju it does seem difficult to lose the weight. My calorie intake over the last 3 weeks must have been half or two thirds of what it was this time last year but I’ve only lost a pound.
I hope the insomnia and anxiety are soon sorted for you soon

I’m trying so hard not to eat between meals. All that’s happened is that my weight hasn’t increased more. I’m sleeping better and able to ban the mental angry conversations I have with my mother in my head, which used to be worse at night, stopping sleep.

Hi I’ve just done a post on hiatus hernia inflammation of stomach and mirtazapine.

I’ve been trying to not pit on any weight but it has definitely increased my appetite I’m hungry every couple of hours or so and if I do t eat the hunger pains are unbearable but today I have discovered quite by accident that if I drink lots of water about a pint I think it seems to delay the hunger pains for longer.  It’s difficult to keep finding things to eat that are healthy and filing isn’t it?

Hi Ju Ju and Smokey
For a couple of weeks after having Covid I felt my appetite was suppressed and I definitely was eating much less apart from salads. Hardly any weight loss and also I felt the Mirtazapine wasn’t working as well.
We finally got away for a family get together I did worry about eating too much when I was away.
I didn’t put on any weight. I am hoping that it seems to be stabilising and I think I eat through boredom or because I can’t resist something tasty.
Is it possible you can eat to little so that you don’t lose weight
I’ve never been to a slimming class but I’m sure I’ve heard friends say you have to eat a certain amount (healthy options of course
Smokey I nibble on celery sticks, a crisp bread or two, picked onions( when I’m not going anywhere 😆), gherkins, raw carrots - to me they are tasty options but I can understand why other people may not enjoy them as much
Over last week Mirtazapine seems to be back working again thank goodness
