Vagifem and estriol
« on: November 08, 2021, 09:03:52 PM »

Hello ladies.....I'm hoping for some advice . A bit of background....I last posted here in June querying going back on Vagifem after being off it for almost three months due to being unable to insert it because of herniated disk problems. It's now November and the last five months have been absolutely miserable. I've had repeated UTI's (culture positive), thrush at least five times ( swabs positive) , vaginal bleeding, blood in urine and a tentative diagnosis of lichen sclerosus for which I was prescribed Dermovate. All this time my vulval area has had a constant burning feeling....most days are a struggle to be honest. On top of that I'm still on crutches due to femoral nerve damage from the herniated disk. Some days I've felt I'm hanging on to sanity by my fingertips.
I've had a cystoscopy which showed no abnormalities and a kidney ultrasound. Today I finally had an appointment at the gynae department of the hospital. I was so glad when I got the appointment, thinking that at last I may get some answers. I was so disappointed though and tonight I just feel so deflated. The gynaecologist (male) had to be the most abrupt doctor I've ever met. He did a womb scan and at least was able to tell me that my womb lining was normal and he saw nothing of concern . I asked about the lichen sclerosis ....at first he snapped at me that it wasn't mentioned on my referral letter but I  (bravely? )asked him to look. He said I don't have it, he saw no signs of it. Of course I am grateful I got the appointment and got some reassurance. However when I tried to ask about the vaginal bleeding and the constant burning he just snapped at me saying "I didn't ask you that dear!" I got the sense I was being rushed out, it was a 5 pm appointment and by now I was feeling kinda helpless so I just got dressed. I'm kcking myself now that I wasn't more assertive.

Sorry for the long winded rant but I just had to get it out.

My question. On the way out the nurse came.after me and gave me estriol cream saying that if it helped I was to ask my GP for repeat prescription. I was so flummoxed I didn't even ask how to use it...how often for example and how does it fit in with my Vagifem regime. I can ring my GP tomorrow ( if I even get through grrr! ) but in the meantime I-d like to ask the knowledgeable ladies on here if they have any advice and perhaps there are some ladies who are also using both Vagifem and estriol together.

Many thanks for reading.

Well done that Nurse  :medal:  BOO to the Consultant, I've worked with a few of those. Jobs worths - OK so the GP didn't mention it on the referral letter: ? and ?  :bang:

R U able to insert the 'vagifem' at all?  I would use it nightly.  The other cream can be used on the outer labia, anal area - which helps to keep the whole area softer. Less likely to get dry and itch.  So laying on your back put a dab on the end of the finger and rub round.  Gently.  You could lay on a towel if you think it's going to dribble ;-).  Oh what we talk about !

U know now that all is A-OK so you can proceed with the 'vagifem' and 'estriol'.  If I get the need2P I take 2 'nurofen' 3 times a day to stop the nip as the spincter shuts off the urine flow.  So sorry that you have suffered

Hi CLKD....good to hear from you and I hope you are well.
Yes, I can now insert the vagifem, thank goodness! It's good to hear that the estriol should hopefully help with the "outside" bit. I feel that that is where most of my problems are. At the moment my prescription for Vagifem is for 24 pessaries per twelve weeks....hopefully my GP will raise my prescription. On a lighter note...my auto correct keeps changing vagifem to "Vatican"  ;D Somehow I don't think his holiness has these problems!

You're right about the nurse...I could have hugged her! I'm desperately hoping the estriol makes a difference. If not, I may just bite the bullet and ask for a referral to a private dedicated menopause clinic.

Hi Jean, I'm spitting bullets reading how you were treated at your hospital appointment by the gynaecologist, it harks back to a distant past and is not tolerated anymore!  Thank goodness the nurse, as always, came to your aid.

What I would be doing now is writing a letter of complaint to the hospital management outlining your experience, if only to help other women in the future.

Thank you Gracie.

Now that I've had time to reflect I'm spitting bullets myself. Normally I have no problem speaking with doctors etc. However today , lying on the chair, legs in stirrups trying to communicate my concerns I just felt awful. The womb scan hurt and I was just trying to deep breathe through it. I am so angry now at being patronized by that man...he kept calling me "dear"....not in an affable kindly way....more like how you would scold a child . The more I think about it the more resolved I am to complain. What is more vulnerable than laying semi naked being poked about like a piece of meat? In my opinion , in a situation like that a little kindness would go a long way! Not to mention addressing the patients concerns.

It's a male attitude.  Sadly.  Across many industries where they think that they are in control!  The Met, NHS ........

I don't think 'dear' is acceptable stranger to stranger these days ?

Let us know how you get on.  I would ring your GP and leave a message asking for more 'vagifem'.  Some require it every night, many GPs don't understand how VA affects us.

I would be very surprised if your complaint about this guy will not be the first, the action of the nurse afterwards tells me he is a problem!

It's only after the event and when our brain gets back into gear that we can reflect on what went before, I wish you well whatever steps you take next xx

I don't think that your letter will even reach the Consultant.  It would be interesting to see if he has any complaints 'against' him.

@JeanGenie, I'm sorry you're having such a horrible time and am so angry to read about your experience with the consultant, his attitude and behaviour is completely unacceptable - what a disgrace to the profession. I agree, the nurse clearly knows this too, they sound lovely but nurses shouldn't have to be compensating for ignorant, rude consultants, should they?
There's some useful info here if you decide to make an official complaint.

Thanks PeriWhat......that's really useful information.

Now, just to put the tin hat on it one of my sons has tested positive for covid. Please God I don't have it....I hate to think there was a chance I was spreading it at the hospital.  I'll be self isolating now ....at least it'll give me time to construct a letter of complaint. I'm double jabbed but this on top of everything else has shot my nerves to pieces.  :(

We pass on germs all the while.  It is said that most C-19 +ive patients catch the Virus whilst in Hospital.

How does he feel?  Does he live with you and is he jabbed?

He has a slight cough, headache and feels exhausted. No high fever and no loss of taste or smell. He is double jabbed. He does live with me but had been staying with his girlfriend last week....he just popped in occasionally to get work clothes etc....so with luck me and his brothers will be ok. It was his boss who insisted he get tested...Matthew (my son) said he thought he was ok as he didn't have a high temperature . He's only being going to work or to see his girlfriend....hasn't been in pubs or restaurants since the pandemic began. Just shows no matter how careful you are it can still catch up with you! :sick02:
