Refused hrt
« on: October 20, 2021, 11:52:19 AM »

 Hi
I'm 53 and I am experiencing menopause symptoms enough for me to contact the Gp.
Because my mum has had breast cancer I have migraines and I'm obese I have been denied hrt .
Is this correct ?any ideas ladies.
I'm really suffering.

Ring your surgery this afternoon and ask for an appt. to a menopause clinic, not a gynaecologist as they don't know much more than GPs do.  What advice have you been given until you are able to take HRT>

What type of breast cancer did your Mum suffer from?   Did she survive treatment?  Quality of Life is important.

What treatment do you get for the migraines?  Did your Surgery suggest that you attend regularly to be weighed, is there a dietician attached to the Practice or local Hospital?

GPs are quick to dismiss when they aren't suffering!

Weight in itself isn't a reason to refuse it though if your gp is concerned perhaps you could agree a weight loss program? BC is more of an issue if it's a type that feeds on oestrogen. At the end of the day as long as you know the risks it should be your decision. I agree a referral to a menopause clinic might be your best option. Try to find out more about your mum's BC before you go.

Your GP is talking rubbish. Plenty if women with breast cancer in the family use HRT. Get a second opinion.

Thankyou for all the messages ladies.
Sorry I don't get alerts for messages.
The practice said that they are taking advice from a gynecologist and will be in touch to ascertain risks?

My mum had inflammatory breast cancer and survived..
I was offered anti depressants.I told her I take them already and I still have symptoms.
Even I know that doesn't put back missing hormones .
Very poor isn't it.I need to assert myself.

Why a gynaecologist who know very little more about menopause than GPs seem to do.  All medication has risks, but we don't get the hassle being prescribed!

Ring this morning and ask for a referral to a menopause clinic.  Push that your symptoms are becoming unbearable ........

I agree you need a meno specialist to advise, many gynaes are clueless about meno and hrt. Another possibility would be email advice from Dr Currie who runs this site, I think it's £30 but might save you a long wait for an NHS meno appointment.

Im a BC survivor and get prescribed transdermal  HRT.

You will need a referral to a menopause specialist. The GP won’t be much help sadly.

Best of luck x
