Which anti depressant?
« on: October 16, 2021, 03:23:28 PM »

Meno specialist isn’t keen on prescribing large doses of Oestrogen as I’m a breast cancer survivor. My evorel 75 patch isn’t cutting my anxiety, despite being on it for best part of a year now. I’m due a blood test in a week or so, to check absorption levels. I’ve also got an oral HRT to trial soon too.

Specialist says that HRT doesn’t fix all symptoms and has suggested trialing  an anti anxiety tablet. Which one do I go for?

Sertraline
Venalflaxine?
Citalopram?

Propranolol doesn’t do much.

Any thoughts? 🙂

Propranolol is a betablocka ........... used by sportsmen years ago to lower anxiety levels.  It helped my early morning surges.

I take escitalopram 4 depression - successfully.  Start at a low dose for 2 weeks then up if necessary.  I have 10mg at night, 5 in the morning.

I have an as necessary anti-anxiety medication .  I have used 'valium' with success as necessary.  Some ADs do ease anxiety as a side effect.

HRT doesn't always help anxiety.  Some require both HRT and ADs.

Thanks CLKD,
Yes it’s a case of which one.
I’ve got mirtazapine for sleep. Is that an anti anxiety or anti depressant do you know?

It should tell you in the leaflet in the box.

My friend finds 'sertraline' helps.  Is there any reason why you can't up the 'mirtazapine'.

I take mirtazapine. Not just for sleep also anxiety. It's liked by a lot of GPs as it has far fewer start up side effects. And for those of us floored by anxiety and hence unable to eat it seems to stop the nausea in its tracks.

I have taken pretty much every antidepressant there is and am currently on both Mirtazapine and Sertraline. Mirtazapine is indeed an antidepressant as its primary use and has good proven results for anxiety too. It really depends on personal tolerance and preference, everyone will react differently. Mirtazapine is known for weight gain which has been shown to be the main reason people stop taking it. It can also make you feel quite sedated for the first 4 or 5 weeks while you're getting used to it, but this goes once settles. Sertraline and Venlafaxine are more what I term as "uppers" compared to Mirtazapine or Amitriptyline for example.  I have also taken Escitalopram and noticed no difference at all between that and Sertraline, or any of the SSRI class drugs. I've always had to start on smaller doses than the normal starting dose of any SSRI or SNRI, as otherwise they make me feel a bit ropey. But many many people don't need to do that, I'm just particularly sensitive (just know it's an option if you are too).

There really are pros and cons for each in terms of side effects and everyone's experience differs, so it's really a case of just finding what works best for you. Sertraline is my go-to medication for anxiety (but I have never suffered with depression) xx

Thanks everyone
I’ve got two issues, poor sleep and anxiety.
I’m hoping mirtazapine will help with both.
If not, I’ve discovered I’ve got sertraline already ( can’t remember how I acquired it!) so will trial that.

It would be so good to get everything sorted with HRT but alas it is t happening 🤔😢

Sometimes anxiety and/or depression are not hormonally linked.
