Body numbness at night
« on: September 28, 2021, 10:55:51 AM »

Hi there

I wonder if anyone can give me any reassurance  today as my anxiety is thorough the roof and I'm no sure I can take much more :-(

I'm suffering with on sided hip and back pain at the moment, probably due to running everyday, which I've stopped for the moment.  I'm seeing a Physio Therapist but I keep waking at night (not every night, maybe twice a week) with the left side of my body numb and tingly.  It's literally the whole side right up over the top of my ear into my head.  It goes straight away once I move so the 'logical' side of me is saying that's it's because of the nerve damage that the physio has diagnosed me with.  But she also said that it's not usually the whole side of the body usually only and arm or a leg.  I don't really get it during the day, just some mild tingling in arm and leg.  And I haven't got any balance issues or weakness.  But I've got a heavy sensation at the back of my head and stupidly googled it all and now freaking out about a brain tumor.

I'm honestly so sick of this anxiety/health anxiety.    Has anyone ever had one sided numbness on waking?

Thank you so much.

Yep - Dr Google decides that most things are due to a brain tumour  >:(  ::)

There are a lot of nerves through out the body so sometimes 1 can get a radiation of sensations.  If it goes once you move, it's probably nothing serious other than continuation of nerve 'damage'.  I have background sciatica this week down the outer R leg around the knee, I know that I don't bend properly when gardening.

Is there anything in the day that you could alter, i.e. your seating position, posture when walking: do look at your foot wear too.  As we age we need more support in the insteps and ankle area so flip flops should be for occasional use.  When did U last change your mattress ............. as oestrogen levels drop, muscles may become lax = aches and pains.  Swimming is supposedly helpful but quite honestly, I can't be bothered  ::)

We aren't designed to run.  Jogging short distances when we chase after our grub or away from the sabre toothed tiger mayB but long distances .  Nope.

Have U had any recent X-rays - cervical spine downwards?  Which area is the physiotherapy treating and do you have homework?  It will depend on which nerves are affected as to which 'root' is causing an altered sense of sensation.

Thank you for taking the time to reply CLKD.  I truly appreciate it.  I hope your sciatica pain isn't too bad.

I had a terrible night last night.  Muscle twitches and spasms as I was dropping off to sleep and woke up with itching/burning on one side of my tongue.  I'm trying to convince myself that these are all symptoms of perimenopause as well as anxiety/stress but I can't help but fear the worse as Dr Google lists all of these as brain tumor or MS :-(   I've spent the morning doing balance/cognitive tests  ::)
I've also had the phantom smell of smoke last night and today.  Been having that for about 6 years when I'm very stressed so I keep telling myself if it was something bad then it would've presented itself by now?
Wondering whether to try some estrogel and see if it starts to help.  I'm on day 16 of cycle tho so not sure it's wise to start now.
Seeing my Physio today too so hopefully will get some reassurance there.  I've got L5 S1 nerve damage which should only affect the lower body.   Neck is tender today tho so I think I may have some problems there too.
Anyway, thank you once again for your reply.  I hope you have a good day :)

Tension may be the cause of your neck pain.  How is your pillow?

Hi

I definitely think tension has a lot to do with my upper back/neck/head pains.  I slept virtually sitting up last night so as not to trap any nerves and cause numbness.  So that probably didn't help.

Been to the physio today and told her my worries and she did a complete neurological assessment with strength tests and reflexes etc and she said that is all spot on, so thats good.

I know I'm making everything worse with the ridiculous anxiety, but I can't seem to stop it.  I tell myself I've had all these things before but my brain likes to over ride the reason and then the symptoms seem to exacerbate  :'(

Thanks again for your help x

That's normal for our age. Apparently  ::)

What relaxation techniques do you use?  My bath and bed R my haven.  Also pottering in my garden, my sanctuary.
