PMDD/ADHD/Progesterone sensitivity
« on: August 11, 2021, 03:35:33 PM »

Hello, is there anyone out there in early peri menopause who suffers from adhd and progesterone sensitive? I have only recently figured out the cyclical nature of my depression and mood swings due to my adhd meds stopping working pretty much at the same time every single month - at ovulation until I bleed on day 28. My psychiatrist says I need to prevent hormone fluctuations and so I have tried low dose HRT of one pump of oestrogel. I only managed two days of the utrogestan and literally spent four days in bed completely floored and unable to function physically, mentally or emotionally. My GP has suggested mirena coil but I feel very reluctant to put any other prog in my body now, it was so awful. Can I use v v low dose oestrogel during luteal phase only and have regular scans? My hormone levels are normal according to doc, although I would say peri has def begun - periods much much lighter and very different to before, insomnia and mood swings, brain fog and memory awful. Does anyone have experience of chemical menopause? Do I still need progesterone? Any ideas would be great.

Hi Ironinlady

I don't have ADD as far as I know but I do relate a lot, so I definitely wonder... Anyway, I do have progesterone intolerance, but I'm in a different situation to you, being in late peri-menopause.

The first time I tried Utrogestan I was similarly incapacitated. This is what's helping:

- Taking the progesterone vaginally instead of orally
- Halving the dose to 100mg instead of 200mg (possible if you're taking it vaginally)
- Taking it for seven days a month instead of the usual 12 (Professor John Studd regime)

I've also started taking 300mg of magnesium GLYCINATE which is the therapeutic dose for progesterone intolerance

Hi, I am progesterone intolerant and having a higher dose of estrogen (4 pumps) and 7 days 100 mg utrogestan vaginally and a blob of testogel eventually helped me. Xx

I have no experience of ADHD but follow the same regime as the previous 2 posters, and find keeping progesterone to a minimum helps.

Monicap as an aside, I didn’t know that about magnesium. How did you find that out?x

Have U been referred to a dedicated menopause clinician?  An e-mail to Dr Currie might be the way to find out what might suit you. There is a charge.  Dr Newsom's Clinic is a good place to get a referral to although there is a waiting list.

How is your diet?  Eating every 3 hours 24/7 can ease some mental symptoms, Dr Dalton did a lot of research in the 1970s/80s about premenstrual syndrome.  I was told by the National Association for Premenstrual Syndrome to eat regularly to stop that awful 'drop' when the body is hungry.

Let us know how you get on!

I had pmdd with cyclical depression I tried a few things on peri which didn't help with sensitivity to progesterone. I eventually got the mirena coil which has the lowest, so I was told, dose. It has helped but heavy bleeding for a while till it settled down

Very interesting thanks Monicap. Btw way IroningLady I would steer clear of the mirena if you have prog  intolerance. Medical professionals push it because its cheap, but it’s not a good idea x

I also have PMDD and the Mirena works for me. I still have a couple of days here and there where I feel flat, and I take Sertraline every day, but things are a lot better than they were.

Sorry I can’t speak to the ADHD piece.

Me! Except full menopause. Taking the progesterone vaginally is the go. The problem is consistently remembering to do it  🙄
