Prolonged Periods
« on: August 13, 2021, 03:38:06 PM »

Hello!  I'm new to this forum and I'm very glad to connect with other women who are reaching or gone through menopause.

I have quite a specific problem/worry that I wonder if anyone can share any insights on...

I am, at 52, I suppose what they call 'perimenopausal' since I am still having periods.  For many years (probably nearly a decade) I have been having worse and worse and heavier and heavier, gory horror film periods which I am absolutely sick to death of.  I nearly had an operation but... with delays due to COVID by the time I got to see anyone it seemed that in the prior 6 months or so nature had taken its course and my periods were lighter and less frequent.  Phew, I was overjoyed and so happy to tell the specialist that I didn't think there was any point going through the operation since I hadn't had a proper period for several months.

However, in this last month, I did start bleeding again and am now into the third week of a period which comes and goes but never fully stops and can be quite heavy at times.

I have been trying to find out why this is happening.  I gather from reading a few articles online that this is not uncommon and is due to fluctuating oestrogen.  Historically I have had bad reactions to the pill (progestegen only) and contraceptive implant so I am reluctant to try HRT.

I have seen some supplements that claim to help with fluctuating hormones and wondered if anyone here has experience of using supplements to help with bleeding and if there's anything that can just even me out a bit?

Also, does anyone know how much longer this might go on?  Months, years??  I can cope with just about anything else, I just want to stop bleeding  :-\

Your GP should new able to prescribe suitable medication if you are bleeding continually.  Have U ever been told that you have fibroids?  A scan may be the way to go.

Your GP should be able 2 refer you 4 a scan if you think it's necessary.  Which operation had been suggested?

I've been bothering the doctor about this for a few years.  I've had scans and yes I have fibroids.  The only medication I've been offered is various methods of contraception which cause me to bleed the whole time and really mess up my system long term so i'm reluctant to go the hormonal route again.  I have tranexamic acid and mefanamic acid to reduce bleeding, they work but give me stomach ache so I only take them in emergencies or for a couple of days.

I just wondered if anyone had similar experience or could tell me how long this might go on for.

Forgot to say, the operation I was going to have was endometrial ablation.  Wish I'd had it now  :(  If it had come up last year (or any time in the last five years ) i'd have snatched their hand off!
