Sensitive to Oestrogen increase
« on: February 13, 2024, 08:38:04 PM »

Hi

I have been struggling with increasing my oestrogen over the past year.  I had a hysterectomy 2 years ago but kept my ovaries. My oestrogen levels were 98 on the 25mcg patch and 160 on one and a half patches, so i know i need to increase to the 50mcg patch.  I have increased to one and a three quarter patch this week, but feel awful - flu symptoms, low, headachy.
i have previously tried gel, spray but each time i struggle with migraines and so revert back to the patch.
i have seen a meno dr and explained how sensitive i am to any change. He advised that once i get to a manageable level i would have the oestrogen implant, which i am abit reluctant to have.

Has anyone else experienced this and any advice?

What symptoms do you have that you feel the need to increase your oestrogen dose?  You don't need to be swayed by your blood results, you base the need on symptoms.

Hi perimeno,

It sounds like you're feeling pressured to increase your estrogen dose.  For some of us, it can take months to settle on a new dose.  That's not unusual.  That's why 3-4 months is the usual time frame for assessment of a new regimen.  It can feel like a long time.

The patch seems to be working well for you.  If you're concerned about osteoporosis, all the standard doses of estradiol protect the bones, meaning 25 mcg-100 mcg patch or transdermal equivalent or 0.5-2 mg of oral estradiol.  Studies show that even a 14 mcg patch can protect the bones, but likely provides less gains in bone density than standard doses.

Why does your doctor think you need an estrogen implant?

Thank you GraceM & Ana21.

my symptoms are low mood, pelvic achiness & dragging (higher oestrogen seems to improve the dragging).  My low mood is terrible and when i did increase to the extra 3/4 patch, i felt worse-really down and wired. I decided to revert back to the 1 and a half patch and will give a few month's to settle.  Last year i tried Oestrogel, i found that really boosted my mood, it was amazing, but i ended up with severe migraines, its amazing how different methods can affect you.

Ana21, that's interesting as i thought the same as you, but my GP said i needed to be on 50mcg to protect the bones.

My Dr mentioned an oestrogen implant as it is given 6mthly and easier to manage. I wont be going down this route in case i react badly to it.

Hi perimeno!

If you need to build bone, your doctor may want you on the higher dose.  I'm sorry it's been such a struggle to get there.  Your bones are still benefitting from the estrogen that you're currently able to tolerate.  Studies tell us that every litte bit helps.

Hi Ana21,

I haven't had problems with bone health in the past, i think its what the GP is saying going forwards.

Low mood and not feeling motivated is my concern at the moment
