Side effects of Estrogel
« on: July 18, 2021, 09:00:26 PM »

Hi I’ve been using estrogel for three weeks bow, I have a mirena as well. I feel no better in fact worse, very bloated with incredibly sore boobs, not sleeping, restless legs, sore joints, quite low mood. How long should I give it? Will the side effects wear off? I’m feeling quite fed up with it all. I’m 53. I was hoping I would feel better to give me some impetus to lose weight and get more exercise but I feel even fatter and more sluggish than before! Thanks.

Hi Tinky, unfortunately it seems HRT can cause some side effects/exacerbate symptoms and you can't really find out if they're going to go away without persevering with the stuff for a while - usual recommendation is three months after which time if there's no improvement, it's worth trying a change of HRT type.

I wonder when you are putting on the oestrogel, as I found that applying it just before bed really wired me and interfered with my sleep.  Switched to putting it on in the morning and that helped.  The other side effects you mention, I had all of them except the low mood and the restless legs with various HRTs, and after a few months they all diminished and went away - different HRTs gave me different side effects, not necessarily all at the same time.

If you can put up with it, try and see it out a while longer and see how it goes.  Otherwise it might be worth seeing the GP to change the HRT type.

Thanks all, I was using two pumps and putting on in the morning. I’m on my second Mirena, this one I’ve had for three years. Anyway I’ve dropped back to one pump as I just couldn’t bear the sore boobs anymore and I do feel sooo much better. I’ve also worked really hard on improving my diet and no booze. I really feel hugely better. Hot flushes have not returned. My question now is - is one pump a day actually going to do anything in terms of protecting me from osteoporosis etc? Is it enough to really make a difference? Thank you.
