Estrogel vs Estradot story
« on: June 09, 2021, 09:02:52 PM »

After a couple of years on Estrogel the packaging changed (late last year) and I started to get problems (increased breast pain/ headaches) so stopped using it for several months until my mood & anxiety got so bad I contacted GP again last month. The practice nurse prescribed Estradot 100 basically because this was the only size available - I was concerned as it seemed a high dose BUT so far its been amazing!!! I feel like a different person! Its only been 5 weeks so I am praying this continues AND that the patches stay available. Just thought I would share incase it helps anyone.

So great to hear this, thanks for sharing!!

I'm on Estrogel and past few months have been difficult. It worked initially very well, until something happened with my own hormones (I suspect a radical drop in endogenous oestrogen due to progressing towards meno). I've increased the dose and have been able to get insomnia, heart palpitations and adrenaline surges under control, but anxiety persists and I'm just generally not feeling at all myself.  :'( My gynae suggested changing to Estradot 100 but so far haven't found the courage as it sounds such a high dose. I'm currently on 2.5 pumps of Estrogel (1.5 evening/1 morning), trying to gradually get to 3 pumps/day. I'm super sensitive to any fluctuations so need to take it baby steps forward.

May I ask, when you were on Estrogel, what was your dose then? And when you started Estradot, any side effects at the beginning?

Thanks and hope you continue enjoying the positive change! xx

Hi, It was 2/3 pumps per day (also have Mirena). I think it took a few weeks and it seemed to work with the night sweats but after about 18months (the packaging/bottle shape changed) I got really bad breast pain & headaches & mood swings/anxiety so just stopped using it and the breast pain went. Not sure if it was me or the product! Youve really got nothing to loose by switching - I found almost immediate results! I'm only on the 100 as doc said others were hard to get hold of in UK so I'll see how it goes as I'm only 6 weeks in.

OK so its now been over two months and I still feel great in myself BUT soooo bloaty around tummy, cant get into my normal clothes & it feels tight & uncomfortable, plus very slight breast pain has started. I  read these are all signs of too much estrogen so should I try and get dose reduced? Any advice please?

Hi again,

good to hear you continue to feel great on Estradot 100! This is not a small improvement!!

But it does sound the dose may be on the higher side. Do you have a chance to check in again with the GP who prescribed it and discuss what to do? Perhaps 75 mcg dose could be considered, though of course when changing the dose there is always the risk that something else will change too. But if the current discomfort is really bothering you, perhaps its time to adjust.

In the meanwhile I've also moved to patches, as I simply couldn't find a balance with Oestrogel. I'm now since Saturday on 50mcg patch. Asked from gynae for smaller dose as I felt 100 mcg would have been too high for me. We agreed I'll try with 50 and if it seems to be too low, I can move up to 75 mcg. Now its only 2 days so too early to say anything.

Let us know how you get on! xx

Had to take 100 patch off for a few days as I was sooo bloated around stomach! Dr agreed to swap down to 50 but pharmacy can only get 100 or 25 currently so now trying 2*25patches. Does anyone know if you can cut a 100 in half btw? Also is it only the tummy where they can be stuck?   thanks!

Good luck EllaAurora  - did you source 50 or 75 estradot patches OK through nhs? May I ask your area in UK?
