Hi, I’m wondering if anyone can help as I can’t get doctors appointment, and I’m sorry but my Drs has been pretty useless.

I’m peri menopausal and have been on and off my HRT for 18 months. The novofem HRT sorts all my menopause issues, BUT cause such horrendous bloating I look 6 months pregnant. I go through a cycle of going on it, then 3 months later coming off due to the stress and anxiety I have with such Hugh bloating. I’m talking 5 extra inches on my female tummy & im only very slim.

However when I come off the HRT My stomach issues and horrible acid reflux & gastrointestinal pain re starts. I’m also on omeprozole now for 2 yrs + which I’m sure  can’t be good. 

I don’t feel that I should have to chose between horrendous bloating or painful gastrointestinal? Any suggestions on the best HRT, as I can’t get to actually see or talk to a doctor due to COVID. I’m booked in to see a private doctor about it, but I’m on a 6 month wait8g list

Hi Janezee. I'm on Evorel and it's never given me any bloating but I do have a hiatus hernia which I have to take omeprazole for so I understand how horrible the stomach issues make you feel.  You may find that you get on better with either a patch or gel HRT as it is usually pill HRT which gives stomach issues.

Have you had investigations as to why you have reflux - i.e. an endoscopy so you know what is causing it?

I’m going to keep trying to get a doctors appointment so I can ask for a patch & hope it doesnt cause the bloating.

I had a endoscopy in 2019 pre covid & was told it was just gastritis & needed to up my dose for 8weeks, but I’ve never really been able to come back off the omeprozole since. It is better when I’m on HRT & I can get away with a tablet every other day, so I assumed it was hormone related.  Do you think I need another examination? 🧐

I was diagnosed with hiatus hernia and ulcerated oesophagus and had to up the omeprazole for eight weeks then have another endoscopy to check it was better before dropping down to 20mg again. When you stop omeprazole you get a rebound effect unless you gradually stop. Maybe another endoscopy would give you some answers. Do you wake in the night with reflux - that choking sensation?
