Menopausal Skin
« on: April 29, 2021, 06:26:02 AM »

Hi everyone. I wanted to ask about new skin conditions during menopause ie itchy rashes, eczema and psoriasis.  I am struggling to manage all three now despite having normal skin a year ago.  Treatment so far has been steroid creams, lotions, tape and I am now awaiting light therapy. In terms of HRT, what have people found to work? Tests show low estrogen but will things settle in time? Grateful for any advice  :thankyou:

Morning.  As oestrogen levels drop, the body may become dry: inside and out; skin, deep in the ears, scalp, eyes, vagina [we have threads on that], between the toes as well as muscles may become lax = aches and pains.

How old are you, when was your last monthly period?  Some find that keeping a mood/food/symptom diary of use.  I itch a lot but fortunately, not all the while.  I use 'vaseline' and 'Nivea' products on my skin as well as a good sun protection lotion.  Deep in the ears is bothersome!  My allergic rhinitis can become difficult at times.

I would avoid light therapy. It won't increase the level of oestrogen which is probably the main cause.  Steroid cream is a little harsh too, was this recommended by a GP?

Get a good quality moisturiser and apply morning and evening.   :welcomemm:  browse round, ask away.

Thank you fo4 your reply. I havnt had a period for over a year now. All treatment is on doctors/dermatologist orders. Just dont think the cause is being treated so no end in sight and affects everyday life as if usual menopausql symptoms were not bad enough!!
I've stopped all steroids and latest is DrOrganics Calendula which was recommended. I just want my skin back!

I don't have any useful advice but IIWY I'd try hrt and see if it improves things. Low oestrogen definitely effects the skin in terms if dryness and loss of elasticity but I'm not sure about the conditions you have. Meno is also a time when allergies can appear or become worse. I don't think you have anything to lose by trying it.

Sorry about your skin Enable2.

Psoriasis is difficult to treat and I take it that you have had blood tests to rule out other conditions. I developed it on my leg during the first lockdown and have also got rosacea which started two years ago. I'm on HRT and have been for fourteen years so for me hormones don't seem to be the cause. Stress is a major factor in psoriasis I believe.

Who is recommending these products?  MayB you R over doing your skin treatments without using appropriate NHS recommendations?

Enable 2 does say all her treatments are prescribed by her doctor or dermatologist.

I've been signed off by my dermatologist even though the Rosacea and psoriasis hasn't really been helped. It's annoying as all of my appointments were over the phone which means the necessary skin scrape wasn't done.

Taz that isn't good enough.  Lots of medics [and solicitors] are hiding behind C-19.  Without a face2face examination I would consider the demonologist to be negligent in his duty of care.  How do you feel about being signed off?
