New to HRT and worried about effect of Utrogestan
« on: April 07, 2021, 11:56:10 AM »

Hello all, I'm new to HRT and to this forum. Would be great to hear about others' experiences of Utrogestan. I'm 55 and am on continuous HRT (started 6/7 weeks ago, so not long) by a private doctor after several years of very low mood and terrible (just awful) sleep. I'm on 2/3 doses of Oestrogel and 100 mg of Utrogestan daily (I take the latter at night). Within a few days of taking the Oestrogel, I noticed an uplift in my mood, felt much happier than I had been in ages. That was on one dose. But within a week or so, this plateaued so I upped it to 2 (the past few days, I went up to 3). However, I think that the Utrogestan is making me bloated and contributing to the return of low mood (hence upping the Oestrogel to 3). I need the Utrogestan to help with sleep and to protect my uterus but, last night, decided not to take it. I slept badly (which may mean that oestrogen levels are still lowish in my system (?)) but feel lighter/happier today. I'm not seeing my doc till late May and wondered if I could take Utrogestan vaginally until I see her. Is it safe to take Utrogestan like this? Do I just insert the tab into my vagina? Would really appreciate hearing from others experiencing the same. I feel like I'm floundering at the moment and feel upset that the initial uplift in mood only lasted a short time. My sleep is still poor and I feel bloated and miserable!

Hi it could be the oestrogen that is making you feel as you do. It is advised to stay on the same dose of oestrogen for at least 6-8 weeks before upping the dose . It takes a while for the oestrogen to build up on your system and you need to build it up gradually. X

Thanks, Dotty. Yes, I did wonder if it might be oestrogen, thanks again.

I think we are all different  and can react differently.  I took utrogestan for three years  and i had problems with it.  I thought it would be better for me  as its biodentical.  I started taking it orally  and it made me crazy. It was better vaginally but for me got worse over time. I wish now i hadn't struggled on for so long . Its seemed to get worse instead of better. However it works well for some people.
I have had to return to the mirena coil and oestrogel.   Just trying to get gel dose right . X

Hi NewtoHRT

I think it’s more likely to be the utrogestan. Type it into the search box and read about others experiences x
