5-HTP
« on: February 26, 2021, 12:01:04 PM »

Hi everyone

I wondered if anyone knows if it’s safe to take 5-HTP with Estrogel, Utrogestan and Testogel please? I asked my private menopause clinic Dr and she said I needed to speak to my own GP as it’s a mental health issue.

I’ve a lot going on right now and I’m just feeling like I need a little bit of help. I’m a bit low and anxious, but going to work and doing everything I need to. Just feeling the shine has gone off things and it’s been going on about 3 months.

I really don’t want to go through all this with the GP. I have experienced severe depression in the past and this is nothing like that. I’m just trying to look after myself.

Thank you in advance xxxxx

There's a weariness creeping in as the pandemic restrictions protract. The shine has definitely gone off for many, cumulatively. As you say this experience now feels nothing like your severe depression of the past, it sounds like you're aware of something just a bit "off" and looking for a solution? How would some short, focused talking therapy CBT style work? I wouldn't feel confident to advise about 5-HTP, sorry. You could contact a supplier like Lamberts and ask about contra-indications? They're incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. Sorry not to be of more help. Good luck.

I used 5-HTP for low mood and sleeping issues and found it really helpful - but this was prior to my HRT days. I find GPs are usually next to useless in understanding contraindications of supplements with medications but often there has been minimal research done.

The Selfhacked website has lots of info about supplements which I've found helpful but sadly nothing about combining 5HTP and HRT.

As long as you aren't taking any other anti-depressants that boost serotonin levels, then I wouldn't imagine there would be any problem taking this supplement. I do however see lots of warning when combining with antidepressants like citalopram, fluoxetine, sertraline, venlafaxine..... and the similar xx

Thank you so much for your replies everyone. I’ll do a bit more digging but I think I’ll give it a try. I’ll start with a really low dose. I’m not taking any antidepressants so safe on that score. Thank you again xx

Hi Simmy, how have you found this?  I have started taking for sleep issues for 3 days which has helped but also my anxiety levels have got higher for the past two days!

There are several threads over the years about this on the Forum.
