Oestradiol level is 586 pmol/l
« on: January 27, 2021, 03:02:13 PM »

Hello,

I had menopause/thyroid function test and got the results today.  The thyroid is fine but I'm confused about the oestradiol result.

I don't know what 568 pmol/l mean.. I took a blood sample this Monday just gone.  Do you think that with 586 pmol/l I am still menopausal rather than postmenopausal?  I thought that past menopause there is no fluctuation and hormones remain low but and stable.  I haven't had a period for 1 year now.  I cannot possibly still be at a menopause stage.

Your advice is very much appreciated.

Thanks

Are you on HRT?  My levels are similar but am on 150 mg estrodot. If you’re not on HRT then you must still have some ovarian function x

I'm not on HRT and I haven't had a period for a year now.  That makes me postmenopausal so I'm not sure why there should be some ovarian activity.  I thought that once in postmenopause there shouldn"t be any ovarian activity but maybe I'm wrong.

I think this is why, if you are under fifty, they say you must use contraception for two years following your last period. I believe your last period was when you were 49? I think ovarian function continues to decline for around two years following your last period. The usual level for post meno seems to be less than 550.

Thanks for your replies.

So if that's the case it means I'm not quite there yet and another period could appear. I have to watch what happens in the next few months.

I'm not worried about contraception as I'm not sexually active.  I'm worried that my symptoms might get worse while still in the meno phase if I'm still in that phase but 12 months without a period indicates postmenopause.  It's hard to tell with this thing as it's a very gradual process and, at times, it can be confusing and I didn't know that in postmeno, hormones can continue to drop.  All I was told is that the biggest drop occurs at the time when a woman enters the meno and after this the hormones remain permanently low and  stable. Or maybe, even after 12 months without a period they continue to decline until they've reached a very low level.  Do you know what the lowest level should be?

I had a report from one of the doctors who was involved in my menopause blood test.  I explained that I haven't had a period for 12 months now and, theorically,  I would classed as postmenopausal.  But, because my oestradiol level was 586 when I took the blood sample on Monday last, I have to watch what will happen in the next few months.  She told that she wouldn't normally expect a level of 586 pmol/l in postmenopause. It's normally less than 120 pmol/l.  I'm not sure why mine is still 586 but she mentioned that after 1 year without a period it's unlikely to fluctuate that much.  I'm concerned that I'll have another period in the next few months, which I don't want to happen.
