Hair loss
« on: January 26, 2021, 05:17:41 PM »

Hi , I’m experiencing menopause symptoms for the last 1.5 years I’m not on HRT , I’m sleep deprived my hips and joints ache constantly I’m 54 .  I’ve decided to give HRT a go I’ve got a phone appt with my GP , I’ve decided on the gel & my understanding is I’d have to take progesterone as I’ve got my womb .I’m also on blood pressure tablets
Does HRT cause hair loss mine is thinning enough as it is
Any advice please

Hi Trixiebell. I've not experienced thinning hair since I've been on HRT (13 years) although some women have I believe. Other things can obviously impact on hair too such as stress, anaemia and thyroid problems of course.

You are right in that you need progesterone to protect your womb while you are on HRT. It takes up to three months before you will know whether each regime suits you so any questions please ask on here. There is usually someone around to give advice, encouragement and support.

My hair got better on oestrogen patches, it took about a year though I think as I was on very low starting dose. I’ve had problems with hair thinning since I started testosterone gel but not with oestrogen, I have. Mirena so only had oestrogen patches

I am on HRT but also started taking thryoxine shortly before as I had bald patches at my hairline. It took a while but I have nearly all my hair back. It would be worth getting your thyroid checked as it's the last thing you should have to cope with alongside the other symptoms. That was my thinking, anyway.

I also suffer from aching joints but find that if I jog/do yoga every day I suffer less, I also take turmeric and have cut down on my alcohol intake. I am Captain Fun.

After a year on HRT my hair finally seems to have stopped shedding as much. It definitely goes through phases though which I guess are linked i with my own hormones. My own cycles have kicked back in again and the hair loss is much reduced now.

Thankyou for your replies , I’m very confused , I’ve got a phone consultation with my GP next week to discuss HRT
I’ve got elevated testosterone so don’t want anything that’s going to make it worse which could cause hair thinning
I’m going to ask about body identical gel which would need to be taken with progesterone
Any advice please ?

I noticed my hair falling out a lot in my 30's. I think why your hair is thinning will have a lot to do with whether or not HRT affects it. For me it turns out to be female pattern baldness (scalp biopsy confirmed) so just like men, I'm sensitive to DHT conversion. As such high testosterone will cause it to be worse (mine's consistently low but I still lose hair). I'm not at HRT stage yet but I found during the 2 months on Zoely that my hair stopped falling out so much and when I went off it (side effects) I had a large shed. Female hormones shouldn't affect it too much if it's DHT related I wouldn't think.

My hair has thinned since menopause even with HRT , oestrogel and utrogestan .  I like to use testosterone but find I do shed more hair if I use the prescribed dose . What is your testosterone level ?  I use regaine at the front of my hairline and it does keep the hair thicker in that region for me . It’s continuous use tho as once I stop it thins again .
