Increase in pulse rate because of HRT?
« on: January 19, 2021, 06:43:00 PM »

Hi everyone, another question about HRT - I've been taking a full strength systemic HRT - Elleste Duet Conti - for a few weeks now.  Recently I've noticed that at night I can hear my pulse absolutely pounding in both ears, worse than tinnitus!  I remember when I first tried this one a couple of years ago (was unable to continue with it because it suddenly became a shortage product) I had the same reaction, except that it felt as if my whole body was pounding in time to my heart beat (not anxiety) and I was having trouble breathing smoothly as well.  This again at night.

I wonder if anyone else has experienced this and connected it specifically to HRT?

Thanks

Hi Lamplighter,  Yes, it happened to me when I started HRT and also when I stopped birth control pills. If turned out to be high bloodpressure in my case.

Oh my goodness yes! It's very odd - I have low BP (90/60) and normal temp but pounding/racing resting heart rate. Do you know what your resting rate is?

Alicess and Iris thanks for the replies.

Alicess, my blood pressure is fine, it's the rate that goes through the roof.  I know that HRT has a risk of raising blood pressure, which is what I thought it was the first time, but took myself off to the doctor and had all the tests etc even while my pulse was pounding and the pressure still was ok.  Do you think your raised blood pressure was due to the HRT?

Iris snap!  I have in fact low blood pressure (often below 90/55) only sometimes hitting above 90 and 60 so I'm gobsmacked to hear the pulse not just so fast but so loud.  I know the auditory part is definitely connected to this particular HRT, as I don't get it on other forms/brands.

I have another post about HRT potentially causing or exacerbating vertigo, and now I'm wondering if the oestrogren, or the particular ingredients of this particular HRT, don't somehow affect the vestibular system.  And that maybe it's that I'm hearing the pulse rate so intrusively that makes it seem faster than it is?

Oh it's all so confusing  :spin:

I'm glad your bloodpressure is fine. Unfortunately every kind of HRT raises my bloodpressure while BCP does not. Indeed very confusing!
Maybe it"s the progesterone/ progestin in Elleste  Duet Conti?

Alicess, good point.  Only how can you tell?  It all seems to be trial and error with a ton of speculation thrown in for good measure as far as finding an HRT that works isn't it?

That's a pain that you get high blood pressure across the board, that must make it a zillion times more difficult to find something that helps xx

Hi Lamplighter - what time of day do you take your tablet? If at night, can you try taking in the morning and see if this makes a difference - though I'm sure you will have tried changing this already.

Thanks Hurdity, interestingly no, it never occurred to me to try taking pills at different times (doh!)  Currently take all pills that I can in the morning, but it could be worth switching to see what happens.  Thanks xxx
