Late Menopause
« on: January 04, 2021, 12:43:45 PM »

Hi I’m Nina I have just tuned 58 in December and don’t think I’ve yet been through the Menopause!! 😳😳 Ok so my periods have been very erratic for around the last 5 years, they were longer then shorter, further apart or closer together. So around 18 months ago I got to 10 months with nothing and then they came back again. I have zero hot flashes, no vaginal dryness, no loss of libido (I have a regular healthy sex life no pain during or after).

This is where I am now.....,I do suffer with moodiness and find myself getting angry for the slightest thing, and I can literally cry at the drop of a hat. I also for the last few months have trouble sleeping, as in it takes me ages to get off to sleep, then I’m awake a couple of hours later therefore it’s very disturbed sleep. I had a period beginning of October for around a week, nothing heavy just regular bleeding used pads, then I had very light spotting at end of October exactly 4 weeks later no pads needed just wore panty liners and even then nothing was there on the liner just light spotting when I wiped after using the toilet, Then I had another regular period end of November where I used pads, and then on Boxing Day almost 4 weeks again I have the very light spotting, nothing showing in the panty liners was just very light spotting, pinky coloured mixed with clear mucus (same clear mucus I would get when I was ovulating) other than this I feel very well and healthy and I have no health issues of any sort and I’m not on any kind of medication.  I have spoken to my doctor (over the phone) as I am so worried as I feel I am so old for this, she says she has requested a gynae scan for me (lord knows how long I’ll wait for that)!!.... has anyone else had this kind of experience, I feel like a freak to be honest, my mum had her last period around age 52 and my older sister was the same so not sure what’s happening with me. I have struggled to find any information regarding older women and going into menopause, so hopefully you lovely ladies out there can offer your fantastic advice. Thanks in advance and apologies for ranting on and on. X

Hi Nina123, welcome! I have just posted this on another thread.

They call it late onset menopause and it's more common than one might think.

Hi Sheila, yes your right J definitely should! It’s just whenever I look this up there’s very little or no information, other women I know my age are all around 6 to 7 years post menopause! Thanks for your words of wisdom. X

Hello Nina,
Please don't worry you are getting checked out and this is the best course of action. I am 60 now but I went through exactly the same thing as you - my last period was just short of my 59th birthday. I saw a top gynaecologist in London and he said it was normal to be 58, not average no but not so rare he hadn't seen it before.

I had a full work up scan, smear, blood tests, and because I had a 6mm lining and a polyp I had surgery. By the next scan 6 months on lining was 4mm then next scan 6 months on 2mm. Ovaries began to shrink and vaginal dryness followed.

I am still being monitored as I have a tiny polyp in my uterus they are watching but apart from this I am fully menopausal now.

You are not unusual! Good luck and let us know how you get on with the scan. Also feel free to message me if you need any more support.

Yes all my friends had finished years before and that made me feel something wasn't right! It was fine- just later than most!

xx

Thanks Machair I feel better knowing I’m not alone, there’s so little information for older women who are still menstruating, also I read all these symptoms out there that other women have and as yet I have none of them so makes me think there must be something wrong with me. X

No Sheila, it s because of the risk of breast cancer reoccurring in right breast as recently had mastectomy on left breast due to non invasive(but may
have become invasive)
(DCIS ).  Antidepressants I won't take as I worry about the side effects ,so you r lucky if not getting any symptoms. My dreadful symptons started
2-3 months after last period..x

Hi, I’m new to this site and so pleased to find it :)
I’m also experiencing a late onset menopause. I’m 56 and my periods have been pretty regular apart from a few missed/late/early periods over the past few years. At the moment though, I am on the fourteenth day of a period and no sign of it abating. It’s not mega heavy and it’s a mixture of a pinky, watery flow, to bright red. Some days, it seems to stop in the afternoon and I hope it’s finished but then when I get up it’s back with a vengeance 🙄 I have also, occasionally  been experiencing irregular heart beats, which I know can be a symptom of peri menopause. I do suffer from health anxiety as well, which is a lot better than it was, but still get over worried about these sorts of things, especially after looking at Dr Google 🙄
I would love to hear if any of you lovely ladies have experienced the same sort of symptoms 😊

Hi

Been shown to this thread by a forum member, thank you! :) I know it's now an older thread but so glad to have found this thread, reading it makes me feel better.

How are (any of you still on this forum) getting along now?

I'm 58 and still having periods, they've never stopped, I occasionally miss a couple at a time, longest has been 3 month gap, but not often. Periods getting heavier, and I assumed I am about to finish soon, last hurrah maybe?

But my GP has just referred me for tests as I cannot be having 'periods' at my age and something must be wrong, she mentioned cancer  :'(

I feel like a freak. I feel SURE they are periods, at least I WAS sure :(  The bleeds are regular, they always last 6/7 days and I get PMT beforehand, mood symptoms. No spotting in between, no other issues re pain or anything.

(Only mentioned it to GP because it was discovered I was anaemic).

Have commented Clovie on your thread.

Funnell - a biopsy should indicate whether the cancer is likely to spread, how many lymph nodes were removed at the time?  If there is a risk to the remaining breast, were you not offered a bilateral operation?

Rosieg - sounds like peri-menopause from where I'm sitting.  My periods waxed and waned: varied from 'normal' to not a lot  ........ for several years.  Stop looking at Dr Google, he don't know nowt!  Better to read NHS web-sites as well as here ;-).

Initially ADs caused big problems for me (1989) but now I've been taking them successfully since 1995.
