Monthly headaches
« on: December 10, 2020, 06:47:32 PM »

Hi, I'm 60 and have just joined the group. I've been on hrt a number of years, and haven't had a period for about 3 or 4 years. I was wondering if anyone else experiences migraines every month? These usually last around 3 days and don't respond to pain killers at all. It's almost like I'm still having some kind of monthly cycle. Thank you.

Hi JulieM60

 :welcomemm:

I used to get migraines quite often. Painkillers didn't touch the pain at all, and I was always too scared to take anything else off the doctor. So I'd try to sleep and if I did, that seemed to work better than anything.
I've been on hrt for a few years now, and they do seem better. When I do get one, the pain isn't so intense and they don't last as long, however, I do get aura more now which I never got before.
So one thing got better, only to give me another. 🤷‍♀️
I think some people are more prone than others. And I also think it still has something to do with our monthly cycles even tho we don't have periods anymore, why I don't know. I still get period pains and backache like I used to get before my period started, so having headaches and migraines at that same time isn't unusual.
Xx

Hi Julie, I get them and I hate it. Exactly as you describe, pain killers won’t touch it. I say to my husband hormonal headache time again! I was never one to suffer headaches but these are so awful. It’s the nausea that accompanies them. I have also noticed my eyes get puffy and watery just before they happen.
Hopefully they will pass. My menopause doctor said it’s the drop in estrogen so to add more gel for a few days but I haven’t tried that yet x

Well that’s really strange because I’ve started to say to myself that I think our bodies never forget periods! I too suffer from monthly migraines. They’re not too bad as I’ve been a sufferer all my life and they’ve changed over the years. But I could do without them!

Hello juliem60 and welcome to the forum.

My story is slightly different  in that I was never a headache sufferer but shortly after my last period I began having headaches daily.

They would be there when I opened my eyes in the morning and stay all day, only easing in the late evening. This went on for  six months after which they stopped happening.  . I am now ten years post meno and still headache free.  I agree with your doctor that they were probably due to a drop in Oestrogen and it seems that my body has adjusted sufficiently, at least in the headache department!

Hope this helps you and take care.
