Hi. I’ve got very positive experience with mine. Had my first one fitted 8 years ago as contraception, periods stopped almost instantly and had none for 5 years. No side effects, because the hormones are localised and the amount that enters the blood stream is tiny. I can’t tell that it’s in - neither can my husband - just a couple of very thin strings high up in my vagina.
Have a new one fitted immediately after having an old one removed wasn’t pleasant - dr told me I could have waited longer in between to give my uterus time to settle but I insisted of having everything done in one go (ptsd reasons).
Since having the second one fitted I’ve just had a bit of spotting every now and again, not enough to need any sanitary protection. I’ve just started using estrogel for perimenopause symptoms.

I had the mirena fitted last sept.(2019) I bled most days for a few weeks , but no where near as heavy or painful as before it was fitted. It took me a few months to feel comfortable down there. I did eventually have the strings shortened as they were quite long. Was very cautious about having intercourse at first. I then started to suffer from really bad thrush and VA. This has been treated with an oestrogen gel. I have however had some random bleeding through out this year, but my GP was not concerned by this. I would recommend having it fitted, but be patient with it. My only concern is that I would like to know what my natural periods are doing. I am due to have mine removed after 4 years, which will take me into my early 50 s. Hopefully be then my natural periods will have stopped.

I was very nervous of getting one, had it put in four years ago so i could start Estrogel. It is due to be replaced in a few months time and i definitely want to get another, i had 4 months of very light daily spotting at first  but so pleased i put up with it as i have had no side effects at all from the Mirena.

Just to add i had mine fitted when i was a year post meno and i wanted to use Estrogel to get VA under control as Vagifem even everyday was not enough to control it.

I am just a year older than you and it is just the awful VA that i have needed systemic HRT for,  i couldn't get on with patches or Utrogestan so Mirena was suggested.

Hi Robotwars

Type mirena coil into the search box to read about others experiences with it.

I personally had a terrible time and had to have it removed.  Not everyone is the same though, it works for some.

Wishing you well x

Hi, I've had mirenas since my late 20s, never looked back. I'm not going to lie, I find it v painful having it taken out & another put in but other than that its been fine. Hubby never feels anything, I know I'm supposed to check the strings but I never have done. This will be my last one now.
Best wishes
