Hi all,


I know there are a zillion threads about Utrogestan. I thought I'd start the zillionth and one...

I'm considering HRT again for osteoporosis reason.

Previously, I had the Mirena coil fitted and an estrogen patch. In retrospect, I wonder if the Mirena caused hair shedding, whether due to the bleeding caused by coil or the type of progesterone.

I am considering Utrogestan. Last year, when i was active on this board, there was a lot of people with dissenting opinions.

Has that changed at all?

I worry about the sedative effect. I rise early for work - will it become impossible? And also bloating/weight gain?

Any thoughts generally welcome.

Thanks for the reply. Do you definitely think the thinning is due to Utrogestan?

For every type of progestin you'll find some people who get on with it and some who don't. All you can do is try it to see if it suits you. You get a misrepresentative view on this site as you tend to get the few who have problems rather than the many who don't.

Hi Noheroics - I was really anxious about taking utrogestan before I started, having reluctantly changed from combi patch to oestrogen only patch with separate utro. My consultant assured me that provided I took them at night I'd find it fine. The first couple of weeks were a revelation to me - I slept, right through to 7am! That has eased up for me now. I now find the last few days (I'm still on a sequi dose) I feel a bit rough from it, but its ok-ish. But when I try to take it on a flat dose all month I start to bleed despite being several years past assumed meno. But it opened up being able to get the right dose of oestrogen for me - that's the huge benefit. I don't find it makes me bloat (oral oestrogen now, that's what makes me bloat!) So by no means all of us find it terrible!

I use Utrogestan and I have no problems with it. I take it orally every night. X

Hi there

I take it 12 days out of 28 along with evorel 50 and vagifem. I fall asleep quickly after taking utro, but no other effects. The main problem has been very little bleeding, I tend to have a minor ‘show’ on days 9 or 10 of the utro and for the first year or so might have full bleeds every other month or so, but currently I have had no proper bleed since May. I feel great!

I had an ultrasound and a hysteroscopy/biopsy earlier this year, as the GP/gynae wanted to check I was all healthy, but everything was fine.

It depends on you and how you react. If you do try something new, give it a while, because your own hormonal fluctuations can sometimes make you think something is because of the hrt when it might not be.

I use it vaginally for 7 days every month. I cannot tolerate it for any longer.  The side effects are always the same. Initially I feel good for the first 4 days, relaxed and sleeping well. By day 5 any libido has been switched off, and the flat mood begins, the longer I take it the worse this is bordering on depression (I don’t have this any other time). Then there are the withdrawal effects as it comes out of my system.  I feel awful for a few days before returning to normal.  My withdrawal bleed lasts 3 days and isn’t bad.  It’s my receptors down regulating which are the worst thing.

My specialist told me my receptors are particularly sensitive.  I envy those who take it with no side effects and wish I didn’t have any.  It’s the same every month and never gets any better.
