Perimenopause HRT advice please help!
« on: October 20, 2020, 08:57:00 PM »

Hello there! This is my first post so I’m a bit nervous.  I’m 44 and not long after turning 40 I started struggling with symptoms like hot flashes, palpitations burning feet and sore gums and insomnia and weight gain (especially my breasts which have grown 3 sizes) , tiredness erratic periods I began trying desperately with docs to find out what was going on with me I was eventually referred and given HRT at 43 by specialist . On the whole I found a big improvement in my daily living starting on the HRT a year ago as I had been feeling terrible most of the time. I found that I actually prefer estrogen patches (I’m on 100mg estradot) than the gel (gel made me feel spaced out) and I take the uterogestan 200mg orally from day 15 for 12 days. However I still struggle terribly during my ovulation window (day 10-15) with mood swings bad cramping, cranky low mood and tiredness as well as just before my period and a couple of days after my period has ended. I seem to dip as my period is combining to an end. My libido is non existent and it’s becoming a problem in my marriage which I hate, weight gain is getting worse not better and to top it all have I have developed ATypical migraines which seem to go on for a few days during ovulation and prior to my period.  My specialist has recommended GNRH to take ovulation away altogether as the next step, which I’m really retissant to do due to the fact that I’m still young. So before that she has suggested that I can try taking the utrogestan A for my full cycle in a half dose which 100mg a day along with the patches to see if it helps with lifts and drops in the hormonal cycle.  I’m worried about that because it seems to be a regime for women who have finished their periods?! I know it can cause erratic bleeding. I feel like I can’t keep repeating these cycles month in and month out. It is like clockwork almost to the day every month. The hormones whether too much or not enough are triggering migraines and the anxiety when I’m in the first half of my cycle is high and the insomnia terrible. Which is apparently unusual. I seem to feel better when I start the progesterone side of the cycle all be it a bit moody and tired during the day.  Is it possible my body doesn’t like estrogen?? Strange to say I know. I just wish i knew what was causing the problem so I could adjust. I’m going to try taking the new regime the specialist has recommended but apparently it can cause erratic bleeding. Sorry for the length of my post but I just feel like I need some help to to hear if anyone else is going through similar. I have read many of the posts and I know Hurdity is a whizz so perhaps she will see my post and have some advice? Any help or advice would be appreciated. Many thanks all  :)

Welcome to the forum you will find this site very helpful with different peoples views and experiences and can be helpful although just bear in mind everyone is different and response to things differently what might suit one doesn’t suit another.

I went on erovel conti sequi patches after a year Of no periods as that is what I was advised at the time that was 10 years ago so unless things have changed I am a bit surprised that you are on hrt when your still having periods . I was 50 then I am now 61 still on hrt but on evorel conti patches but reducing the patch to come off it slowly as you must do it slowly  and not suddenly with any hrt. Maybe your body is getting a bit confused with the hormones if your still having periods . Menopause Is a very confusing time as you do feel all sort of things that you didn’t have before and you just want to feel normal and so you have to do what ever suits you and gives you quality of life if you are unhappy or what you have been prescribed isn’t working please contact your doctor to discuss alternatives as there are many . I’m sure other ladies will be along to answer your post also but also hrt does take up to 3 months to settle down so give it time .its normally the progesterone that gives you the problems but see how you go

Good luck

Hi Js
Thank you for your reply. After testing through the menopause clinic it showed that my estrogen levels were low as well as my testosterone levels. I have now been on the HRT for a year and generally feeling better for it. They have also offered me testosterone gel which I need to start using. I could never find a pill that suited me. When my period started becoming irregular some months very short cycles and some months 38 day cycles.   I spoke to the specialist but she said when they give hrt to younger women they use the hrt to suppress the cycle. I’m just not sure! I think I probably need to get in touch with the specialist again. It’s just at the ovulation window where my natural estrogen would rise that seems to be the issue. As soon as I take the progesterone I actually feel relieved. I’m wondering if lowering my 100mg oestrogen patches would help...
Hopefully I’ll get there in the end
