Progesterone oral intolerant - need advice
« on: September 16, 2020, 06:17:35 PM »

Hello lovely ladies - wonder if you can help.  I am progesterone oral intolerant.  I have spent the best part of a year trying out (along with Estradot 100 patches) firstly provera for 4 months, then mirena coil for 3 months and then Utrogestan (daily) which have all left me with terrible depression.  I had PND after giving birth 16 years ago so fall into the ‘reproductive hormonal depression’ that Prof Studd talks about on his website.

The regime that Studd recommends is Utro for days 1-7 which should give a scanty bleed but I would have to have regular scans to check that the lining is still thin.  I am trying to find a consultant that would back me in this last resort in Lancashire.  Other than that, I would have to go to London.

If anyone knows of such a consultant in the Lancashire area, I would be so grateful if you could directly PM me the details.  I am fairly desperate after wasting so much time trialing all of the above regimes.  Words cannot describe the nightmare this has become and I know there are other ladies who have equally suffered. I would really appreciate any help.  I know that it would have to be a direct PM due to data protection etc. Thank you x

Hi there - sorry to hear about your problems with progesterone. This is common. Have you tried taking utrogestan vaginally? The 7-day regime isn't really in favour. I'm not sure even Studd recommends it especially any more - if he's still practising? Some women on here did get endometrial hyperplasia and their regime was changed to the accepted minimum of 10 days. However under strict supervision you may find someone?

Have you looked at Louise Newson's website? (Menopause Doctor) - she may well have some suggestions for women in your position. Also her clinic is closer than London and I think anyway they do phone consultations now which would be cheaper? Then you could get the precsription from your NHS doc.

Not sure what you mean about data protection? The list of specialists recommended by BMS can be found publicly here: https://thebms.org.uk/find-a-menopause-specialist/ . It's fine for women to mention who they've seen provided any comments are not defamatory!

Good luck

Depression can be grinding.  I suffered for several years, 4 me it's cyclic unrelated to hormones.  So I have to take ADs for Life in order to function.

You could ring Prof Studd's secretary 4 advice or as Hurdity suggested, read Dr Newson's website.

Let us know how you get on.

Thank you both for your kind replies.  I will look into this further.  I have put 200mg Estradot patches on today to see if it will lift the depression as Studd suggests. X
