Heavy bleeding since starting pill.
« on: August 09, 2020, 06:09:17 AM »

Hello, Im 42 & experiencing peri menopause symptoms.
My main ones are very heavy periods, flooding, aching joints, anxiety, hot flushes and sleep problems.

My GP says my bloods are fine apart from low white cell count.

She has recommended a “low dose” combined pill orveena taken back to back to help with symptoms & reduce periods.

I started taking it 14 days ago on the first day of my period and Ive had heavy bleeding & clots since.

I rang her for advice & she tells meits my body getting used to hormones.  Im feeling very drained at this stage.

Anyone tried this approach & has success after the initial settling in period.

I was refused any sort of combined pill at 40 ??? so can’t help you with any direct experience, I started HRT after 3 years of similar symptoms to you at 46 and it worked really well at helping with the bleeding to start with . I’ve had heavy extended bleeding this year and have developed fibroids so the issue has returned. I would insist that the GP prescribe you something to help control the bleeding. I take transamic acid which is safe to take along side my HRT and it’s a life changer. You are probably suffering from anaemia and I can’t understand why doctors allow woman to put up with such heavy bleeding. It could well be your body getting used to the pill but that doesn’t mean, especially considering they already know your blood count is so low, that you should have to put up with it. No wonder you’re feeling drained! Unless of course there’s a medical reason why you can’t take it?
Also during peri blood tests to check hormone levels are pretty much a waste of time because your hormones are all over the place...so can show “normal” results. They should be basing treatment on your symptoms, so if you can’t get along with the pill they’ve advised you take , maybe push for some form of HRT instead x good luck!

Thanks for reply 7dwarfs.

She wont even discuss HRT as my periods are regular.  Every 25 days I bleed for 8 so thats why I was going to try pill.

Im already taking transmic acid but GP not keen on using it as a long term solution.  The mirena was the first suggestion but Im reluctant to try it.

I also have fibroids which are probably part of the reason for heavy periods.

Oh how I love being a woman!

Aren’t we blessed! If possible I’d be changing GPs,  you’re  very young in menopause terms and need the correct treatment to help protect you for the future. Are they monitoring your fibroids and have you been offered any solutions other than the coil? It seems the favourite route but I’m not willing to have it as I can’t tolerate levonorgestrel.

They are taking a “wait & see” approach regarding the fibroids.

Im starting to think I may have to reconsider the coil if the pill doesn’t work but I hate the idea of having it.
