Hi All,

Wonder if anyone can help.

I am 53 and been on HRT for 2 1/2 years. I have Evorol 50mg patches and Mirena coil for the progesterone.

I am now in my 4th year of the coil and will need this replaced this year or removed and take another form of progesterone.

I am happy with things as the are but suspect my doctor would like to remove and not replace the coil.

Has anyone stayed with a coil beyond 53 years old? Any thoughts on what alternative progesterone is available.

If I can’t have another coil I would prefer not to take a tablet form and would like something with little / no side effects.

Years ago I took progesterone tablets to delay my period whilst on holiday and had terrible side effects - mood swings .

Any thoughts or help please.

Is there an age limit for coils??! Golly, I’m 51 and just had my first one inserted......if it suits me I was planning on having at least one more before I considered coming off HRT....but might need to be on it for life.

IF there isn’t an age limit and it suits you, I personally wouldn’t look at other progesterone options at all. Lots of women really suffer from the side effects of the different types (Utrogestan for example) and struggle for years trying to find something that suits them or causes the least side effects. If you’ve been lucky enough to find a form which gives you little to no side effects, I’d personally fight tooth and nail to have another inserted!

I’ve no idea if there is an age limit though so hopefully someone more informed will come along and shed some light on this aspect. I watch with interest as this is news to me....

I had one fitted 3 years ago (aged 45) and was told due to my age it can stay in for 7-8 years.  I would check with your doctor for family planning clinic.

If you need a Mirena for HRT then 7-8 years is too long.  It has to be changed after 4 years if you;re using oestrogen as well. For contraception it's different.

Baldrick - if you want to use it as the progestogen part of HRT then this is what it is licensed for as well as contraception so they can't say you can't have another one - if it suits you! Do stand your ground if this is what you want to do. As far as I understand there is no age limit. I was offered one at 60 when I had some spotting and had a hysterosocopy and biopsy. The gyane wanted to pop one in (Mirena that is  ) while he was digging around up there. I politely declined!

I had a Mirena fitted when i was 53, GP said she would be happy to fit another one when it needed changing.

Hurdity....mine was meant to be changed this April but GP said it could stay in for 5 years but it worries me as i am on high dose of Estrogel.

 My Gynae is happy to leave my mirena in for 5 years. I'm 13 months in and using gel or patches- whatever the chemist can get hold of. Hope that puts your mind at rest .

Thanks everyone for your thoughts, I will go back to my GP and ask for another Mirena :-)

@ Blue kingfisher - I’m not sure about an age limit, it does seems that lots of GP’s have different opinions on HRT and what you can and can’t have.  From the comments below i think you can have the coil beyond 53 so I shall be pushing to have another coil fitted.

@Tinkerbell - I do remember being told by my Gyane that you need it changed everything 4 years when using it with Estrogen HRT.
