Our Red Kites seem to have disappeared as have the Buzzards.   :-\
Perhaps they are fed up with the strong winds and rain.

We went there in 2009.  No kites around until about 10 mins. B4 feeding time - then over 70 as well as an albino bird, with a few buzzards.  They really don't need feeding any more, they are well established  ::)

7 over here the other afternoon ……… and when Himself was fishing last week one was cruising close by as he had left 1 fish on the bank  :o …….. Rockingham Forest is the place to see them too not far from Corby.

watching a tiny little wren hopping in and out of the climbing rose this morning I couldn't help wondering - how come they can live outside in the cold without getting hypothermia whilst I shiver just going out to clear up what the dog leaves on the grass  ::)

Feathers have a lot to do with it babyjane and also the fact that the feathers are coated in oil which acts as insulation and waterproofing. Birds legs and feet are also covered in tiny specialised scales which keep the heat in. I think that birds are also able to restrict the blood flow to extremities in really cold weather. Wrens in particular tend to pile into empty nest boxes or tree holes during really cold winter nights - I think the most ever found in one nest box was over 60!

Well that might be a great idea for all of us - we would warm up and cool down without having to take off or put on layers of clothing!

I put some crumbs out for the birds, looked out of the window and a robin appeared, then another one. It was a lovely sight, cheered me right up ;)

Good news Limpy.  :D

Our siskins have arrived this week too and there is a different finch in amongst the flock - looks a bit like a Twite but difficult to see with all of the chattering and fluttering going on. How the goldfinches hate them!!

I love watching the robins although they do get in some really noisy fights with the blackbirds in my garden!

Yes the robin we saw was looking very round, obviously no shortage of food, made the Siskins look skinny!
Lots of nuthatches too. Maybe it was the time of day but their colours look more vibrant than usual.
