Hi Galadriel - could you let these people know? It's a simple little contact form to fill in so that they can plot the different arrivals. http://www.britishbirdlovers.co.uk/first-cuckoo  Obviously if it's a tagged cuckoo then it will appear on the BTO website soon but there are loads of untagged ones.

I'd love to be woken by the sound of a cuckoo! I haven't heard one here yet (don't think we get them every year now) although my husband heard one driving back from somewhere the other day.

This year we have 12 flower spikes from our early purple orchids in the orchard - one more than last year so they are spreading!!  :)

To all the birdlovers on here - yesterday lunchtime we had a really heavy downpour of rain and when I looked in the garden there was a big fat pigeon laying on it's side on the grass raising it's wing up and down, then it turned over and did the same on the other side - was it just having a wash do you think?  At first I thought it was injured but after a while it got up, waddled round for a while then flew off....very strange ::)

 ……… it could have been having a bath; anting; playing 'dead' if a predator was around ……. did it fly away?

Hedgehog around each evening  :-*
Birds begging for live meal worms every time I appear at a window or the back door  ::)

I've seen wood pigeons doing that along with blackbirds and the occasional starling. I think they are just taking advance of the rain to wash under the wings - saves all that energy splashing around in the bird bath.

Could have been Honeybun  ;D  I suspect Taz and CLKD are nearer the truth though and it was just having a jolly good wash.

I am reliably informed that we saw a Wheat Ear today.

Oooh - lucky you. We don't get them in our area. Pretty birds.
