They are brilliant to watch and very funny when they first arrive. Obviously they are all different ages now. I think what will be the last brood arrived on Tuesday so we had the pleasure of watching them take their first bath in the old frying pan which serves as a bird bath. Of course after that they are really perplexed that wings which had worked a few minutes before were now very difficult to use. The initial bath is so important to get the feathers waterproofed.  The goldfinches have just turned up with their latest two offspring too - what a noise they make while they are fluttering their wings asking for food. Talk about drawing attention to oneself!  ;D

Yours is late Taz  ;D I noticed ours singing 2 weeks ago.  A baby robin is hopping about the patio, his breast is moulting out into red.  We have 3 young blackbirds about waiting for live meal worms, I make sure that a part of the garden remains damp so that they can peck for garden worms/bugs.

Spent Friday at the British Bird Watching Fair ……….

Our resident robin has just started to come onto the patio again for food after spending the summer in the trees and bushes at the bottom of the garden. I can hear him singing away each morning as it becomes light. Also seen the blackbirds again and after a gap of a few months the green woodpecker has been visiting again. Must stock up on the bird food, fat balls etc looks like its going to be a busy autumn/winter keeping them all fed and watered!!

I've always wondered what green woodpeckers eat in the winter? They almost seem as if they should be migratory as their diet is ants and I've never seen them on the seed feeders. Do they feed on yours thorntrees?

I haven't had a break from the birds as we feed all year round - costs a fortune though - but the population will change especially the starlings as the ones from northern Europe arrive. The blackbirds are still shepherding the last of their three broods but that's more a case of the youngsters being too lazy to move on rather than them needing parental help!  Am watching the tagged cuckoos online to see how far they've got. Migration is fascinating!

this is a lovely thread although I have only read a couple of pages. What a lovely forum this is to find a nature thread in the middle of it  :)
We have bird feeders and at some times in the year we can't keep up with their demands and at other times have hardly any and a bag of food will last 3 months. Its strange but as our house borders on woodland they probably get food elsewhere and dont rely just on what we put out.

The green woodpecker works his way up the lawn and seems to be digging in the grass presumably for ants. He doesn't bother with the feeders but once when we were on holiday in Cornwall we did see a spotted woodpecker on a feeder .Agree that this is a lovely thread, takes you away from aches and pains and anxiety for a while to appreciate nature. Lots of blackberries about this year so have a freezer full for crumbles etc in the winter plus also made some yummy jam.

Green woodpeckers eat crane fly larvae from the lawns.  Nuts.  Worms etc. ………. small bugs up trees.

We have had a litter of bluetits around this morning, 5/6 flittering about - a late fledging  :-* oh the noise  ::).  The fat balls have been pecked at, nuts are being emptied by birds, need to order more live meal worms this week.

I was told recently that waxwings have to eat coloured fruits or the feathers go very pale  :-\ ……… during the cold Winter of 2012 nor last year nothing touched the rose hips …….. so have pruned the roses hard.

Green woodpeckers eat ants and small larvae plus some seeds. I don't think they eat worms or nuts.  :-\ Will have a search.

I think it's the Cedar Waxwing which gets wing colour from it's diet CLKD?

we can always tell when autumn is coming as the bird droppings on the bottom patio where the birds sit on the fence turn purple when they start eating the berries  :)
