I had a very different bird visit the garden today.

I am pretty sure it was a woodpecker. It was brown and cream and about the size of a blackbird but a different shape. It did not stay very long or eat anything.
What would it eat from the bird feeders. I would love to attract it back.

Hmmm - brown and cream doesn't sound woodpecker-like Honeybun. Woodpeckers here are either green and cream or black and white. http://www.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/birdguide/name/g/greenwoodpecker/index.aspx   or http://www.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/birdguide/name/g/greatspottedwoodpecker/index.aspx   I wonder what it was??

Ok same shape but different colour. It was definitely brown and cream.

I had never seen one like it before and thought the only thing it could be was a woodpecker.

Any ideas Taz. It was a very pretty bird but not one of our usual ones.

Mistle thrush?

Is it there this morning?  You could ask one of your local bird bods to come round, though if it is unusual you may find yourself making tea for 100s of twitchers  ;)

I noticed yesterday that my House Martins are back.  They come every year and I make a note on my calendar - must check whether they're later this year?

Since our neighbours moved a few weeks ago and took their 2 cats with them :),  our garden has been full of birds again.  This last year birds have avoided my garden and I've been throwing away bird food and suet balls because they've not been used.  It is such a joy to have the birds back.   :) 8)

Do I remember that you live near the coast? Could it have been a wading bird (there are lots of species!)? They are often brown and cream.  Usually long legs and medium to longish beak.  Some look brighter - eg stripey/dark bands when they fly compared to when they are at rest. Are you near sand or mud or an estuary? Urban or rural? What was it doing?

We are on the coast but don't get seabirds in the garden.

Really not got a clue what it was. It was perched on the garden fence.

We live next to a huge country park that breeds all sorts of things but never seen anything like it before.

We have a pair of spotted flycatchers nesting ....

I know the feeling Pennyfarthing re cats - since our cat died other younger cats are coming around and more adept at stalking the birds unfortunately - but I do love the cats too!

Wow that's incredible!

Today attacking giant weeds with a spade at front of front garden wall where it joins the road - and suddenly a slow worm slithered out. Worried that I had damaged it, so I picked it up and it was quite happy so popped it into the bush in the front garden! I love to see these creatures.
