I put out some bran i have had in the cupboard for some time but not one bird has come to the table for it. Should I maybe soak it, or shall I throw it away? Any ideas please?

I also spent 20 minutes today watching what must have been at least 20 bees on my iceplant. They were so busy, it was fascinating. Small little bees, about bluebottle size but not so fat

Took my mum out yesterday, 2nd outing since her op, she really enjoyed it. We saw some small Japanese weather loaches, I love these we guys, but wonder if it's too late in the season to put them in the pond?

We had weather loaches years ago, put 6 in and never saw them again: apart from one which got stuck in the pump system ......... went in forwards, got stuck and apparently they don't reverse!

Never heard them called 'japanese' though  ??? glad your Mum enjoyed her trip, it's a bonus for your both  :great:

Just been watching a spider spinning her web from my conifer to my fence.
She was rolling up a white ball and when she reached the fence she stuck it on as if it was a piece of blue tack.
The spider then turned and sort of looked at me and started to spin towards me.
At this point I said,"don't come any closer spider".
She turned and went the other way.
Fasinating to watch, although I'm not that keen on spiders.

The bird nut container has not been filled quickly enough. Blue Tit comes and taps on kitchen window till somebody goes out to put more nuts out.

Think this behaviour started in the bad weather, when great tits and nuthatches were hogging the nuts. I ran screaming over to the window,  to stop blue tit, whereupon all the big birds flew off, leaving the blue tit, who was watching, free to get at the nuts. That Blue Tit has us trained.

Late last night I let our dog out and there sitting on the communal green by our flat, under the bathroom window was a hedgehog. Said dog didn't quite know what to make of it as he's not met one before. He sniffed and Mr H sat still.
Took dog back inside then waited to see if the hedgehog was ok. His little nose came out and he was sniffing around.
I'd noticed 3 small holes in the ground a few weeks back and wondered what had made them. I guess it's where he's been digging for grubs. anyone know if that's right?
Should I put food out for him? If so what?
Never had a hedgehog before. I was a bit worried as we get a lot of foxes
around here.  :-\
The green where he was is quite a smallish area as we have communal gardens for our flats too. I wonder if he wandered there from one of the gardens.

Cat food.  Or water an area in the ground so that he/she can dig out worms that will surface.  They are noisy eaters though  :o

Hi San - what a surprise for you! Hedgehogs have a normal range of around four miles each night so you may be on his nightly route. If so he should appear at roughly the same time tonight - give or take twenty  minutes or so. They like cat or dog food but never put anything out which contains fish as this gives them dreadful diaorrhea - the same as milk does - and leads to dehydration. They have a varied diet and will eat worms - starting at the tail end first and chomping very noisily, beetles, dead birds or mice (which can lead to poisoning problems) and anything sweet! Slugs are not their most favourite of foods despite common belief although they will eat them if there is nothing else around. Foxes are not such a threat to them as badgers. Foxes will try to take a sick hedgehog but badgers tackle both fit and sick ones using their digging claws to disembowel the unfortunate hedgie - not nice to think about but we all have to eat I suppose.  A dish of water somewhere in the garden would be very much appreciated.

You might like to check out this page http://www.hartwildlife.org.uk/index.php?page=feed-a-hedgehog  I am one of their volunteer collectors/drivers and unfortunately it has been a very bad summer for them.

My dog keeps well clear of the hedgehog as she got her nose pricked  ::).

We also have grey squirrels and I bought a special feeder for them in an attempt to keep them away from the bird food. Its been quite successful and fun to watch. I also have a rook that has figured out how to open the box to get at the food.....clever birds but a flamin nuisance.
