Thanks for that taz I shall pass that on to him. My hubby dabbles in wood turning - he made a roundish bird house suitable for blue tits to nest in. We put it up last year and we saw a few blue tits check it out unfortunately none of them moved in this year - which is a shame. We can't decide whether to move it or wait it out another year. Unfortunately my neighbour has a cat who prefers my garden to hers - we don't know if that's why they never stayed either. We have tho managed to persuade her to put a bell collar on the cat so at least the birds get some warning of its presence. Xxx

Our friend's dog chases the birds but they come back  ;D

This friend has 2 spotted woodpeckers in her garden, I've spent half an hour watching them preening in the sunshine this afternoon  :-* ............

She also told me about a friend who had visited India several years ago and was sun-bathing on a beach.  During the afternoon she brushed off a large spider from her thigh, which swelled 2-3 days later.  In hospital the area on the thigh was lanced and lots of spiderlings scurried out  :o and she required skin grafting soon after.  Fascinating or horrifying?

Don't have nightmares, nature heals.  What would make a spider choose a human thigh? But maggots, leeches etc. have healing properties when used correctly.

We don't know!  Brushed away I expect.  More worried about the skin grafting that was required.  Me, I would have wanted a PhD out of that situation !

Talking of maggots , yuk, just as awful as spiders in my opinion! An elderly friend of ours has just had 2 toes removed (diabetic) and was sent home with live maggots eating the poison.  I can't imagine having them crawling around inside! Yuk!

This thread used to be so delightful (CLKD !!) with all the lovely bird stories, etc and expert help and advice from Taz.

Someone post something nice, and quick, please!

Animal, vegetable or mineral?  Could be an eel did it wriggle, occassionally they will surface to grab air.

Definitely didn't wiggle.  It was tubular and looked fairly solid.  Looked a bit like a thin pipe with whole down the middle, about the size of your pinkie.
